Cut, arrange, glue, then watch the same ideas come alive on screen. ✂️

SMC’s From Print to Screen: Collage Workshop explores collage across paper and digital mediums. Start with scissors and glue alongside gallery artist Michelle O’Brien to build a paper collage, then see how the same ideas show up in collage film and stop-motion animation. Try both yourself with quick demos on editing public-domain footage and animating cut-outs in Canva.

Michelle leads the first half; Brad Glanden, SMC’s Programming Coordinator, teaches the digital half.

Artist Michele O’Brien’s work is currently on view in our art gallery. Join us for a gallery opening and mixer on Thursday, July 9th from 6–7 PM! Refreshments will be provided!

About the Artist:
Michele O’Brien is a collage and mixed media artist working out of her home studio in Somerville, MA. She uses colorful palettes and a variety of papers including vintage, found, hand-painted sheets, and print transfers. She enjoys exploring those choices and generating new combinations in her work.

Michele’s collages have been shown at Boston City Hall in 2022 and 2023, at Galatea Fine Art in Boston’s SOWA art district in 2025, and in numerous group shows in Cambridge, Somerville, Boston and New York over the past decade. She received an Individual Artist Grant in 2023 from the Massachusetts Cultural Council and is an active member of Somerville Open Studios and the Cambridge Art Association. Her favorite color is all of them.

SMC is closing early at 3pm this Thursday, June 4th for our big event, Lights, Camera, Joe Curtatone! We will re-open Friday, June 5th at noon.

Join us at Arts at the Armory from 7–9pm for a celebratory evening honoring former Mayor Joe Curtatone with our Public Service Award. The night includes cheese and specialty bites from Formaggio Kitchen, drinks from Arts at the Armory, and live music by Revolutionary Snake Ensemble. All proceeds support SMC’s programs and services.

Don’t miss out on raffle items including a private tour of Formaggio Kitchen’s cheese aging caves, a case of wine from Ball Square Fine Wines, dinner for two at Sarma, a $100 gift card to Olde Magoun’s Saloon, a photo session from Jason Corey Photography, and more surprises on the night.
