Jason Byrd Firefighter Relief Foundation

Jason Byrd Firefighter Relief Foundation Our journey actually started in June 2018 when a fundraiser for a Fayette County Firefighter with cancer was being discussed. Halford Sr.

The Jason Byrd Firefighter Relief Foundation was established to financially assist firefighters that are injured or die while performing their duties, and to insure that no firefighter would become financially destitute through no fault of their own. After consulting with the Fayette County officials we discovered that county fire departments could not (legally) hold fundraisers without a non-prof

it status. Thus we began the journey of creating the “Fayette County Firefighter Relief Foundation” to benefit any fallen, sick or injured Fayette County Firefighters. Then during the overnight hours of Monday , February 18, 2019 Fayette County experienced it’s first Line of Duty Death with the passing of Chief Jason Byrd. District Fire Chief Jason Byrd was the Chief of District 14 in Fayette County. He suffered an apparent heart attack while working at the scene of a house fire. Chief Byrd touched many lives in his 22 years of service to Fayette County. He had a big heart, a huge smile, and even greater passion for helping other. Any firefighter in the county that had the honor of working with Chief Byrd knows he especially cared for his firefighters. It seemed only fitting that we name the new foundation in his honor. Although at the time the foundation was still in the planning phase, the passing of Chief Byrd only underscored the need and our motivations to bring the foundation to life. In June of 2019, we established the founding members Tim Walker, Paul M. and Chief Richard Hatfield. Together with the assistance of an amazing attorney Jerry Potter, the “Fayette County Firefighter Relief Foundation” D/B/A “Jason Byrd Firefighter Relief Foundation” was officially established in August 2019. Our foundation will serve to care for the firefighters and fire departments of Fayette County as they work to protect our communities; and to honor God in everything we do. Today, with a heavy heart, I must share the heartbreaking news that has deeply affected our entire fire family. A devastating incident occurred, resulting in the tragic loss of one of our courageous firefighters in the line of duty and three others injured.

With deep grief, we announce the passing of Lieutenant Jeffrey Norman, a courageous and dedicated member of our team who made the ultimate sacrifice. Jeffrey was a leader and hard worker who took pride in serving his community.

Lieutenant Norman began his career with the Memphis Fire Department on September 23, 2002, and faithfully served for 20 years.

During this unimaginable loss, we extend our condolences to Lieutenant Norman's family, friends, loved ones, and Memphis Fire Department brothers and sisters.

The fire service is not just a job, it becomes your extended family. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Memphis Fire Department and their families. Draw closer during this difficult time, and through the strength of others this too shall pass.
