Using our regular meeting to work on a service project! The “Dictionary Project” is a special work for the Somerville Rotary Club! “The gift of words”! We will give out between 85 and 90 dictionaries this year! Kids are so excited when they find out that they can keep them for their own!

Looking for our meeting place today? We’ll be meeting in the Community Room at Citizens State Bank at 12:00 for our regular meeting! We’ll be finalizing one of our Community Service projects. We provide a Dictionary to each student in the 3rd grade at Somerville Elementary School! Due to a supply shortage last year, we will give a dictionary to each 3rd and 4th grader this year! Come join us!

Last night we were able to do one our favorite service projects that we look forward to each year - The Challenged Hunters’ Dinner. It is an unusual service project but one we are proud to be a part of.

Each year in Somerville the Corps of Engineers that manage Lake Somerville along with the the two sate parks on the lake and the Wildlife Federations around the lake along with other organizations sponsor a deer hunt on the Corps’ land. It is strictly a population control hunt as there is no hunting allowed on lake anywhere except for this one time a year. The hunt is designed to maintain a healthier deer population around the lake.

The over population of deer in our area have made deer somewhat of a nuisance animal in town and the subdivision around the lake. We all enjoy seeing the deer but at the same time most people have no idea how destructive they can be in so many ways.

The other unique thing about the hunt is that it is an invitation hunt where only physically challenged individuals can apply for the opportunity to hunt. The hunters come from all over the state. We are always glad to see them for they are not only a great group of people but in the end they do the Somerville and lake community a favor.

Somerville Rotary Club has the privilege of providing and serving the hunters a fellowship meal the night before the hunt. We are glad when when the hunt is on because we have made friends with some of the hunters over the years and always look forward to seeing them again.
