The former Sahar Hassamaim Synagogue is celebrating its 8th Anniversary as one of the top Jewish Heritage Museums in Europe. Coordinated by Dr. José de Almeida Mello, three concerts by the Johann Sebastian Bach Choir and Ensemble hilight the celebrations on the 21, 22 and 23 of April, 2023.
Last night’s concert, featuring Hebrew traditional music and song, delighted the full capacity audience.
By candlelight and artistically decorated with fresh flowers, the old beautiful sanctuary echoed the sounds os Israel for more than an hour.
Before the concert, and during a short but meaningful ceremony, Dr. Mello presented two citations to Jewish community members who have been vital to success of maintaining and restoring the old temple.
José Carp, former leader of the Jewish Community of Lisbon who was instrumental in the transition of the Synagogue to the local municipality for its proper renovation and preservation.
Jorge Delmar, affectionately known as the last Jew in the Azores was recognized for being the key holder for the Synagogue for many years, and the gatekeeper for the Jewish cemetery in Ponta Delgada.
Congratulations to those who have contributed to the success of the museum and the dissemination of the Jewish presence in the Azores.
