Our Story

The Franklin Food Bank began helping families in 1975 out of the basement of a small community church. It was known then as the South Somerset Emergency Food Bank.

At the time of its founding, the organization was run entirely by a small group of community members who provided emergency food assistance for families during the holiday season.

In 1982, Paul LeShack, Peter Muniz, and the Reverend Frank Piazza Jr. formed a revitalization committee for the purpose of broadening community support so that the Food Bank could operate year round. The committee was sponsored by the Somerset Ministerial Association and had 18 original members, including representatives of four churches, the synoagogue, the Salvation Army, and the mayor of Franklin Township. Space was donated in the former Franklin State Bank Facility and the Food Bank changed its name to the Franklin Township Food Bank to better reflect the community it served. The revitalization committee successfully incorporated the Franklin Township Food Bank as a 501(c)3 non-denominational, non-profit corporation in 1982. For the next 34 years, the Food Bank successfully served the food needs of the community and became one of the most well known food banks in the State of New Jersey.

In 2016 the Food Bank realized that many people thought we were operated by local government. The Food Bank is a private, non-denominational, non-profit organization. Although we receive small government grants, the vast majority of our funding comes from individuals. To better reflect who we are, we changed our name to the Franklin Food Bank, dropping the Township. The Township is who we serve and not a part of who we are. The Mission of the Franklin Food Bank is to serve the food needs of our local community in an atmosphere of dignity and respect.
