Look what’s happening at the Common Threads Fiber Festival…

Join Pennsylvania Master Naturalists to learn about the importance of our local ecosystems to farming and raising fiber animals. You will have the opportunity to see how many different types of wildlife you can identify and then make rubbings of their tracks to take home. We will also have amazing examples of “natural weaving” done by birds to create nests for their young.

The Master Naturalist program is a statewide partnership initiative that aims to connect people with their local ecosystems through intensive natural science training and local conservation service work. It is a venture directed toward developing a local corps of “master volunteers and service providers” to offer education, outreach and service dedicated to the understanding and management of natural areas within their communities. Banner Project to Celebrate America’s 250th

Fiber Friends are getting started with creating squares and triangles for a banner to be displayed at the Historical Center this August! We’ll invite contributions from those attending Common Threads as well. Guidelines are simple: create a square (no smaller than 4”, no larger than 5”) or triangle (with one edge between 4” and 5”) from FIBER. This could be cloth (hand-woven or commercial), yarn, etc., and can be woven, knit or crocheted, embroidered . . . we’d like to showcase a full range of fiber arts. Make one or a dozen(s). . . work individually or team up. Our color palette is RED, WHITE, and/or BLUE. We’ll assemble them as part of our July and August gatherings.
Shown here: example squares knit by Jan (very simple); underneath, cloth woven by Mary that Jan will transform into appropriately-sized squares and triangles. Beth is planning some counted cross stitch. Please share your ideas and inspirations!

A note: anyone attending Common Threads will be welcome to contribute fiber creations for the banner anytime before the end of July. They can be dropped off at the center or mailed.
