Blessed in Trust

Jeremiah 17 begins with a rebuke. God is calling out the Israelites for their idolatry—for trusting in other gods and forsaking Him and His teachings.

Like a parent with a child who's made a terrible choice, God makes it very clear that these choices have led and will lead to consequences. And yet, rather than only focusing on all that's been lost and will be lost because of Israel’s terrible choices, Jeremiah takes a moment to bring a refreshing reminder:

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him.”
Jeremiah 17:7 NIV

He calls those who trust Him “blessed,” even as chaos, sin, and idolatry reign around them. He says that people who trust in God “will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” (Jeremiah 17:8 NIV)

We get to choose who and what we worship.

Who is your confidence in? Who do you trust? If you're trusting in the Lord, take heart knowing that in this you are blessed. An abundant life in God, full of fruit even when sin is all around, is the mark of having chosen to trust Him. What an incredible thing it is to be able to make this choice!

Passing Along God’s Wisdom

What if the choices you make today could shape someone else’s life for years to come?
Proverbs 22:6 says, “Direct your children onto the right path & when they are older, they will not leave it.”

It reminds us that our actions don’t just affect us—they also act as an example, guiding & directing others, whether we realize it or not. Which direction we guide others… matters.

When you trust Him, God can use your consistent acts of faithfulness over time to plant His wisdom deep in a person’s heart.

The book of Proverbs is a powerful collection of wisdom meant to teach people how to live well & thrive according to God's values. Throughout Proverbs, parents are encouraged to pass that wisdom on to their children. It’s 1 of the clearest examples of the Bible telling us exactly what Scripture is for. The goal isn’t simply to pass on rules to follow, but to train others to see clearly so they can recognize the difference between the path of wisdom & the path of foolishness.

Proverbs 22:6 isn’t saying that parents can control the choices their children make. Instead, it points to the lasting influence of faithful, consistent guidance.

This kind of influence takes time & genuine care. It happens through repeated conversations, everyday choices, Scripture, prayer, correction, encouragement & setting an example. If you’re not sure where to start, consider inviting a child, friend, or family member to begin a simple practice w/ you: reading 1 chapter of the book of Proverbs each day. It is full of God’s powerful wisdom for a thriving life.

Whether you’re guiding a child, mentoring someone younger, or simply trying to live faithfully before others, remember this: you may not see the results of your faithfulness today. That doesn’t mean you aren’t making an impact. Keep going. Trust God w/ what you can't see. Trust that when you plant God’s wisdom, over time, it will take root & grow.

For every 100 extremely low-income renter households in Pennsylvania, only 39 affordable and available rental homes exist.

That leaves 61 households searching for homes that simply are not there.

A person can obtain income, complete applications and do everything asked of them—and still be unable to find an affordable place to live. This is one reason escaping homelessness can take time, even when someone is working hard to move forward.

Affordable housing is not an abstract policy issue. It is the difference between continuing in crisis and finally having a stable place to call home.

How Can I Help?

Think about the last time someone was kind to you. Kindness is 1 of the most powerful forces on earth & serving other people can transform someone’s life for good.

All of us have the ability to do good for someone & God has gifted each of us w/ special abilities & talents that can be used to serve the people in our lives. Whether it’s a spiritual gift or a learned skill, you have unique opportunities to show kindness to those in need.

Paul, the writer to the Galatians, is careful to note that we won’t always have the opportunity to do good for others. We can't know how many days we have left on earth & we certainly don’t know how long certain people will be in our lives. That’s why we should use every opportunity to encourage & help others.

Serving & helping others is a form of love. When we take the time to help someone, we allow them to experience Jesus's love through us. Doing good for someone opens the door to conversations about the love that Jesus has for them.

Paul also says that we should help those who are believers. That's because those who are believers are our spiritual family. Just as we ought to care for our relatives, we should also look for opportunities to love those who are a part of the Church.

How has God gifted you w/ talents & abilities to serve others? Take some time to think about a few people in your life that you can help. Maybe it’s letting someone know you’re thinking of them, or perhaps it’s helping someone w/ a need they have. In any case, be on the lookout for ways to do good to all people as you go about your day.

The Good Life

Everyone on earth is searching for "the good life." We all want our lives to matter—to be filled w/ purpose & significance. Often, we're searching for fulfillment & meaning through things, people, or efforts that simply can't satisfy us.

Many people try to find significance from the admiration & acceptance of those around them. Others look for fulfillment through material possessions & worldly success—by working hard & building wealth. Still others chase what they think is "the good life" through the allure of power & influence.

Though none of these things are necessarily wrong on their own, they can't bring true peace & fulfillment in life. There will come a time when fame & accolades fade, when material possessions lose their charm & when our reputations can only take us so far. Even the good relationships in our lives can't bring us ultimate peace & fulfillment.

Jesus lets us know how the enemy tries to keep us from the actual good life He has for us. The thief tries to steal our attention away from what truly matters by distracting us w/ earthly things that have the allure of satisfaction, but this way only ends in death & destruction. Jesus says there's another way to find abundant life.

In John 10, Jesus compares Himself to a good shepherd who cares for & feeds the sheep in His pasture. Jesus says that He's the gate for the sheep to enter into the courtyard. While speaking in metaphors, Jesus is saying that anyone who wants to gain true access to salvation must come through Him.

Jesus also says that it's through Him that we will find true life. It's only through trusting in Jesus & following Him that we can experience life to the fullest. Real fulfillment & meaning come through following Jesus as our Shepherd, rather than following the world around us.

Think about the way you’re searching for fulfillment & meaning in your life. Are you trying to find "the good life" through possessions, status, relationships, or success? Or are you following Jesus & trusting Him to produce meaning & purpose in your life?

Jesus is the Good Shepherd. Trust in & follow Him. He's the way to abundant life.

Keep Practicing

In Philippians 4:9, Paul tells the Philippians to model his behavior by putting everything they have learned, received, heard & seen from him into practice. There are at least 3 benefits to this approach.

1st, it’s effective. We learn best through imitation. We would never just tell a child how to kick a football. We would show them. A carpenter wouldn’t take up their trade by reading a manual. They would apprentice under a master.

Likewise, we shouldn’t just read about what our faith should look like. We should seek out mature believers who, like Paul, put it on display. Although we can certainly read about selflessness, humility, forgiveness & compassion, we get a stronger sense of what those qualities look like when we see them lived out in fellow brothers & sisters.

2nd, it’s relational. In 1 Thessalonians 1:6-7, Paul reveals how this process plays out. He imitates Christ. Believers imitate him. Then other believers imitate them. It’s a chain reaction. As we model faithful believers, we become models ourselves.

3rd, it’s attached to a promise. This is the best part. Paul tells us that if we put these things into practice, the God of peace will be w/ us. Not just any peace — a peace that Paul says surpasses all understanding.

Ask yourself who in your life models the faith & what would it look like to start living like them?

Healing is Possible

Imagine a sick person who won’t tell anyone about their symptoms. W/out help, getting through their illness would be challenging. Whether they need help from a doctor or just someone checking to see how they’re doing—it’s much easier to heal w/ the help of others.

Similarly, when we don’t tell anyone about the challenges we’re facing, it can be hard to work through them. Sometimes we do things we know are wrong, but we don’t tell anyone about it because it feels easier to hide. This is because we’re all affected by sin—our wrongdoing & brokenness that separate us from God.

It can be hard to share our wrongdoings w/ others, but when we keep our sin to ourselves, we’re like the sick person who won’t ask for help—we suffer in isolation rather than allowing others to help us heal.

James 5:16 tells us to share our wrongdoings w/ other believers so that we can heal together & pray for 1 another. When we share our past mistakes w/ someone, we're released from isolation. When we pray together, we give God the opportunity to heal our hearts.

God’s our healer—He saved us from the eternal consequences of sin through His Son Jesus. Because of Jesus, we’ve access to a relationship w/ God & we can bring our requests to Him & trust that He'll hear us.

This doesn’t mean God will always answer our prayers in the way we think they should be answered. Instead, when we share our brokenness w/ Him, He invites us on a journey that'll help us grow closer to Him.

If you’re struggling w/ something today, take some time to share it w/ a trusted believer. Allow them to pray w/ you & ask God to guide you as you heal.

The Best Plans

Jeremiah 29:11 is a popular verse that’s often slapped onto journals, etched into coffee mugs & printed on t-shirts. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you & not to harm you, plans to give you hope & a future.” Jeremiah‬ ‭29:11‬ ‭NIV‬‬

God does have a plan for you. God does want to bless you. God does want to give you hope & a future. But—we should also pay attention to the original context …

In this case, God was speaking through the prophet Jeremiah to the people of Judah—people who’d recently been exiled to Babylon for 70 years.

The Jewish people were banished to a foreign land because of their insatiable appetite for sin. In fact, for 23 years Jeremiah was warning them to stop rebelling against God or prepare to face the consequences. God's patient, but He is also just.

In other words, the Jews were sent to timeout. As you can read in the preceding chapters, God made a case against His beloved people …

They’d exploited foreigners, orphans & widows. They’d denied the rights of the poor. They’d refused to stand up for truth or obey God’s instructions. They’d murdered the innocent & committed adultery. They’d rejoiced in doing evil & their lives were ruled by greed. They’d even built pagan shrines, sacrificing their sons & daughters in the fires. It was a dark time. Yet, somehow, God’s mercy always extends to the darkest places on earth.

Just a few verses later, God said they could seek Him & find Him & He’d bring them back from captivity (Jeremiah‬ ‭29:13‬-14).

That’s why he encouraged them to build houses, plant gardens, get married, have babies & work for the peace & prosperity of their temporary home (Jeremiah 29:5-7).

He wanted them to know: He hadn’t forgotten them. He still wanted good for them. He still had plans to restore them. God's serious about sin, but He’s just as passionate about redemption.

Jeremiah 29:11 was meant for a specific people at a specific time, God’s heart for the restoration of broken people is generationally timeless.

Even when we feel stuck in the process, God still has a plan. We can put our trust in the God whose goal is always redemption.
