Every time I see a homeowner raking leaves into bags to dispose of at the side of the road I want to shout “Don’t you know that decomposing leaves feed beneficial microbes and earthworms and contain essential minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium?!?“

Leave the leaves. If you don’t want them on the lawn, rake them into a compost pile and wait for them to turn into rich, earthy soil. Your garden will thank you 😌

Garden closing work day 2025

Our garden runs with the aid of dedicated volunteers, who perform numerous activities to keep it running. We are grateful to ALL of our community garden members who have worked hard this past season in keeping their plot and their surrounding plots tidy, and who have assisted with reporting and addressing issues and concerns. The key word is community.
We have an opportunity to come together during Saturday's (Nov. 1) workday to help close the garden. The weather should be pleasant for this outdoor activity, and can be an enjoyable/rewarding way to spend some time.
We sorely need more of you to volunteer, and helping with the closing of the garden is one of the covenant requirements that everyone agreed to.
As a few have already expressed that they can not be there on Saturday, we are offering Thursday and Friday (Oct 30 and 31) as additional work days for those few individuals.

Here are the things that can be done on Thursday and Friday this week:

- Removing growth from all fences and gates
- Removing any debris from the garden and the compost pile
(Note: the compost pile is for ORGANIC MATERIAL ONLY. Too many people are throwing plastic and other materials from their gardens into the compost pile, which means that we won't be able to get a company to come and remove the pile unless that non-organic material is removed.)

PLEASE, if you are able to come on Saturday, Nov. 1, that is when the bulk of the work is going to be done, and we need lots of hands. This includes:
- Removing and storing stakes

- Removing and storing handicapped tables and decking

- Removing, draining and storing hoses

- Storing garden tools and wheelbarrows

- Draining water lines
- Removing all remaining debris

Some gardeners have already helped with garden closing activities; thank you so much! We need the rest of our gardeners to help (preferably on Saturday). Even just an hour or so makes a huge difference.

Thank you so much!

Kind regards,
SCG Committee
