๐Ÿ‹๐Ÿ’™ High Seas Treaty Ratified!

Yesterday, Morocco became the 60แต—สฐ country to ratify the High Seas Treaty, the last signature needed for this landmark agreement to enter into force.

In 2023, countries signed the High Seas Treaty, pledging to put 30% of these waters into Marine Protected Areas. But it was only able to enter force if more than 60 nations ratified it meaning they agreed to be legally bound by it. That threshold has now been reached.

โ€œThe High Seas Treaty ratification gives legal justification, along with the U.N. World Charter for Nature, for NGOs to intervene against activities threatening life, diversity and interdependence in the sea.โ€ - Captain Paul Watson. Our mission continues!

This is clear evidence that countries can work together for environmental protection.

The treaty will formally come into effect in 120 days, in January 2026, marking the beginning of a new era for ocean protection.

The Mission Continues

While the ratification is cause for celebration, the Captain Paul Watson Foundation stresses that the fight is far from over. Industrial krill trawlers are currently devastating the Antarctic ecosystem, stripping away the very foundation of the food chain upon which whales, penguins, seals, and countless other species depend.

This destructive exploitation directly threatens the biodiversity the High Seas Treaty is designed to protect. Our mission is clear: to defend life in the ocean, enforce these new protections, and expose and confront the industries that profit from the destruction of marine ecosystems.

Every sailor says, if youโ€™re serious about sailing and youโ€™re going to own one, youโ€™ve got to do it. A buddy of mine that I race with with gave me that opportunity today. A huge learning opportunity, and one big ass confidence builder! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฝ๏ฟผโ›ต๏ธ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ˜…

So thankful for Lions Club of Mobile for the opportunity to speak to the group yesterday to share our passion for our community! We agree that more needs to be done to educate the public and accountability for littering, especially in our coastal communities connected by streams, rivers, bays, the Gulf of Mexico and all waters that lead to our oceans ๐Ÿ’™๐ŸŒ๐ŸŒŠ

Youโ€™d think a nice yacht like this has a garbage can on board, but I witnessed the owner/crew ok with dropping trash in Fly Creek. Dispose of your trash properly, Harbor Lady and dumping it into my creek, bay or ocean is a fail.

We are seeking grant funding for these types of projects because we know that ghost gear (abandoned, discarded and lost fishing, crabbing and sh*****ng gear) are out there.โ€ฆalong with the waste that we retrieve from surrounding area cleanups. Read ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿฝ!

Really good webinar for explaining the composition of plastics, effects on human and marine life health and where we are and are projected to be with the millions estimated in our oceans ๐Ÿ’™๐ŸŒ๐ŸŒŠ

Plastics are one of the most common substances in everyday life, found in everything from toothbrushes to cell towers. Now they have spread throughout the ocean, with surprisingโ€“and costlyโ€“consequences for us and for our ocean planet.

Great job cleaning up City of Fairhope beach! ๐Ÿ–๏ธ

Since the cleanup crew used tongs to pick up garbage, analysis was completed by individual pieceโ€ฆ a total of 3003 were picked up in less than 3 hours! This took a lot of focus on the ground - in sand, dirt, and under leaves, straw and in storm drains.

Some description of how items were organized on the International Coastal Cleanup app:

Bottle caps (plastic) - included some plastic lids

Cups, plates (foam) - included flat foam pieces

Foam dock pieces - included chunky colored pieces of foam that could be found at docks

Construction metals - included electrical and industrial tape and flag material used to mark a location.

Foam packaging - included chunky pieces of foam that would be used to make foam coolers, etc.

Strapping bands - included cable or zip ties

Other plastic waste - included unidentifiable plastic pieces

Other waste - included aluminium foil, unidentifiable metal pieces, glass and some paper

Gloves and Masks - included Band-aids

Plastic/foam pieces under 2.5 cm - this count is probably somewhat low as pieces this small may have been included in โ€˜Otherโ€™ plastic waste
