Now that we're at approximately the 62% point of the Kenai River early-run king salmon return, it is becoming clear that the run will not achieve the preseason forecast of 2,325 large fish.

This season has experienced later-than-average run timing, likely influenced by low water conditions and cold temperatures. However, despite the delayed timing, only 781 large king salmon have been counted to date.

Current statistical projections indicate virtually no chance of reaching either the lower end of the Sustainable Escapement Goal (SEG) or the Optimum Escapement Goal (OEG).

If these projections hold, this would mark the fifth consecutive year and the seventh time in the past nine years that the early run has failed to achieve its escapement objectives.

Fishing in Alaska means being ready for just about anything. πŸ”οΈ 🎣 Pack the essentials before you hit the water: rod and reel, tackle, waders, polarized sunglasses, rain gear and your fishing license.

On the Kenai, being prepared is half the battle. The second battle comes when you yell, β€œfish on!”

More repercussions from the Department of Law's delay in reviewing conservation-minded proposals adopted by the Alaska Board of Fisheries this winter.

Today, Commissioner Vincent-Lang issued a clarification acknowledging that many regulations passed during the 2025-2026 Board of Fisheries cycle are still under review and have not yet taken effect.

As a result, fisheries continue to be managed under outdated regulations while adopted conservation measures remain in limbo.

Opening day on the upper Kenai River is here! 🎣

Starting June 11 at midnight, anglers can get back on the water above Skilak Lake for another great summer season.

Whether you’re casting from the bank, drifting the river or just soaking in the view, opening day is a tradition many look forward to all year long. Before you head out, make sure to check current regulations and emergency orders.

Pack your gear, bring your patience and maybe an extra cup of coffee for those early morning starts. β˜•οΈ

We're now past the 30% point in the Kenai early-run king salmon return. Numbers to date are behind schedule for the forecast and tracking similar to 2023 and 2024, which were record or near record low returns.

When early counts are low like this, numbers generally move back toward the forecast as the season progresses.

Run timing has been consistently later than normal in recent years, and there is still time remaining to reach the forecast of 2,325 large fish.
