With perpetual summer sunlight on its way, our Solarize the Kenai campaign is in full swing. Here's an update on our contracted capacity, net metering, and yard sign plans.

As of Tuesday, our north peninsula Solarize campaign has 26 participants who've contracted a total of 127.28 kilowatts of solar capacity. This means we're in the third tier of our pricing system, and the rates for an installation from Midnight Sun Solar have dropped to $2.84-$2.70 per watt -- as low as they're going to go (the reductions are retroactive for people who've already ordered). For comparison, Alaska’s average solar installation rate is $3.13/watt, according to SolarReviews.com.

As of late May, the south peninsula Solarize campaign had contracted 140.81 kilowatts, making our peninsula-wide total at least 268.09 kW.

CHICKENCOMPOSTING
Blair Martin of Diamond M Ranch will be composting what we collect in his winrow in a field on West Poppy Lane, where ultimately it will be used for peony farming. Until the winrow is is thawed for the summer, we’ll be composting indirectly via chicken. Blair is taking up to 10 gallons a day to feed his chickens over the winter, and when he cleans the hen-house in the spring, the manure and leftover scraps will go into the winrow to become compost. See http://kenaichange.org/community-composting/ for more info.

Nearly half of all solid waste is compostable, but when buried in a landfill it decomposes into methane, a greenhouse gas over 30 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Instead of generating methane, composting converts organic material into stable soil carbon and makes it available to plants as a valuable fertilizer.

“While many landfills have some form of methane management, it is far more effective to divert food waste for composting,” according to Drawdown: The Most Comprehensive Guide Ever Proposed to Reverse Global Warming (from kenaichange.org) https://www.drawdown.org/solutions/composting

Composting can range from backyard bins to industrial-scale operations. Regardless, it converts organic waste into soil carbon, averting landfill methane emissions in the process.
