From 8:00 PM on July 4, 2026, through 10:30 AM on July 5, 2026, Grant County Fire District 7 responded to 20 brush fire related calls throughout our service area.

Our firefighters battled fires throughout the night and continue working today to ensure every fire remains contained. At several points, multiple large brush fires were burning simultaneously, stretching personnel and equipment to their limits. Mutual aid was requested, but neighboring agencies were also experiencing an overwhelming number of emergency calls. Even so, they sent every resource they could spare.

Despite the relentless pace, limited resources, and little to no sleep, our firefighters never wavered. Through their skill, determination, and teamwork, every fire was successfully contained without the loss of a single structure. Although a few hotspots have reignited this morning, crews remain on scene, working tirelessly to keep them under control.

While the fire crews were battling these incidents, the medical side of the department was busy as well. EMS personnel responded to multiple medical emergencies throughout the night, coordinating seamlessly when several calls that came in at the same time. Every patient received the care they needed and was transported for further treatment when appropriate.

It is difficult to put into words the amount of work, dedication, and sacrifice our members gave over the past several hours. They set aside time with their families, missed holiday celebrations, gave up a night's sleep, and willingly placed themselves in harm's way to protect our community.

On behalf of this community thank you to Grant County Fire District 7, thank you to every firefighter, EMT, dispatcher, and mutual aid partner who answered the call. Your commitment, professionalism, and selfless service made all the difference.

If you have the opportunity, please take a moment to thank them. A kind word or simple gesture of appreciation goes a long way. Without their dedication and willingness to serve, last night could have had a very different outcome.

Currently, there are numerous fire calls happening around Grant County. Wind conditions are causing fires to quickly spread out of control. Please, at this time put out any bon fires you may have near by and do not start any warming fires. Please avoid lighting more fireworks due to many of these fires were likely started from fireworks. Thank you for doing your part to prevent further emergencies and allowing our firefighters to gain control of the current emergencies.

Please remember what environment our community resides in. There are a lot of dry fuels around us that will easily catch with just a small spark. If you are going to be setting off fireworks this year, please do so safely! Our firefighters have done so much this year already, let's do our part to prevent more fires! Keep fireworks far away from any dry brush and have some water ready in case an accident does happen. Properly dispose of any used fireworks, they can stay hot and a potential risk for a while after being set.

We know how much fun and exciting this time of year can be. We just ask that everyone does so safely!

Firefighter Spotlight of the Month!!

Want to get to know your community firefighters a little better? This month, we are proud to spotlight Sheena McKernan!

Sheena is a local community member who chose to start volunteering at Grant County Fire District 7 (GCFD7) about 2 years ago! We reached out to Sheena to ask her more about herself and about her firefighter side.

We asked Sheena about what first inspired her to become a firefighter. “I know I’ve always wanted to do something that involves helping people. There were times in my life when I needed help from first responders and they were there for me when I needed them most. That really stuck with me.” Sheena expressed wanting to be able to be there for people like they were for her. Once she started volunteering, she realized how much she loved the job and being a part of a team. “I knew it was something I wanted to keep doing.”

Sheena shared with us a story of a call that has really stayed with her. “I’d say probably my first fire.” Sheena first planned on joining GCFD7 and focusing on the EMS side (Emergency Medical Services). As of today, Sheena has completed nearly all of her training/testing in order to become an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician). “I didn’t think I was strong enough to be a firefighter.” As Sheena responded to her first fire, she was given the opportunity to learn from another firefighter with a lot of skills and experience. “I learned so much working on that fire, and I have carried those lessons with me on every fire since. That experience gave me the confidence and realization that I could be a great firefighter.”

When asked about what she found most rewarding about the job Sheena responded, “Being able to help people when they need it most.” Sheena also appreciates how every call is an opportunity for her to learn something new. “Seeing my own growth and gaining confidence in skills that I once doubted I could do, has also been one of the most rewarding parts of my experience volunteering.” In this day and age where technology can give us any information in the palm of our hands, it is a great lesson to remember that it does take time, work, and effort to improve in different skills. Don’t give up if you aren’t perfect on your first try. Sheena didn’t, and now she is an amazing, knowledgeable, and skillful firefighter.

We asked Sheena more about how the last two years at GCFD7 have been for her. “I think I’ve grown a lot as a person.” Sheena shared how she would describe herself prior to volunteering. She viewed herself as a really shy and anxious person. “Now, I have become a lot more comfortable and outgoing, especially when it comes to working with my crew and handling different situations.” Sheena stated one of her favorite parts has been the people she has worked with. “You really get close with your crew and learn how much you rely on each other. Just like my first fire, a lot of those early experiences really shaped how confident I am now and reminded me that I can do this job and keep improving.”

While Sheena is off-duty, she enjoys spending time with her little family. Sheena is happy in her relationship raising her amazing cats together. She also takes time when she can to see her friends. “I love going on Taco Bell runs with my best friend.” Sheena enjoys being outside in nature by hiking, but also takes time to stay indoors to play video games and watch anime. Sheena also has a very creative personality. “Sometimes I’ll do some art or dye my hair a different color and mess around with makeup whenever I’m feeling creative.”

Lastly, we asked Sheena if there was one thing she would want to share with the community. “Just to be safe and responsible this summer. Remember that there are people who care about you!”

Just as you did us, we wish you to stay safe this summer and want you to know that we care about you! Especially with all the fires that GCFD7 has fought so far we ask for the community to take great care in preventing wildfires. Firefighter Spotlight of the Month!!

Want to get to know your community firefighters a little better? This month, we are proud to spotlight Evan Bolyard!

Evan is a local community member who has been here for many years. You may know him from one of our greatest town gems, Cloudview Kitchen, which is a popular family-owned business right in town. However, Evan has also dedicated much of his time volunteering as a firefighter and EMT with our local GCFD7. We reached out to Evan to learn more about his story and how he became part of our local fire department.

Evan expressed that he has always had an interest in emergency services, but wasn’t sure what path to pursue for a long time. During his shifts at Cloudview, members of GCFD7 would frequently stop in and talk with him. “The more I interacted with them, the more interested I became in getting involved.” It was about two years ago that Evan went on his first ride-along with the department. “I’ve been hooked ever since.”

We talked with Evan about how the last two years have been for him since joining the department. “Working at District 7 has been unlike any other job because it’s something you truly live and breathe. It may not always be glamorous, but showing up for your community alongside people who share the same passion and values is incredibly rewarding.” Evan shared with us some of his favorite moments that included trainings with the department and community events in our area. “Whether we’re improving ourselves as a team or spending time with the public, those experiences help strengthen both our department and our connection to the community.”

When asked what the most rewarding part of the job is, Evan responded, “The brotherhood and the mentorship.” Even after two years, Evan is still one of the younger and newer members of the department. Over the two years, he has earned his EMT certification and has grown in his knowledge and skills as a firefighter. However, Evan also expressed how much he has grown as a person and that what he has gained in these two years can only be described as ‘invaluable’. “Every call and training teaches you how to become a better firefighter/EMT, but the moments spent around the table with the crew, listening to stories, experiences, and life lessons are just as important.”

Evan shared an experience that particularly stands out to him from the last two years. It was his first medical call that involved an infant child. “I remember watching the Chief assess the patient while simultaneously comforting the parents with such ease and confidence.” Evan expressed that seeing people in crisis find trust and reach that moment when they feel safe with one of our emergency responders is incredibly inspiring. “Sure, the big fires are what we live for, but the moments of patient care and being there for people when they need it are the moments that stay with you.”

When Evan is not on duty, he tries to spend as much time outdoors as possible. He enjoys paddleboarding, kayaking, and hiking. “I enjoy being outside and staying active.” Evan also prioritizes spending time with his family. “As much as I love this job, I think it’s important to create some separation from work when possible and enjoy time with the people who matter most.”

Lastly, we asked Evan if there was a message he wanted to share with his community. “I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to serve such an amazing community. It has been an honor to build relationships with people from all walks of life through the many different aspects of this job. Getting to know community members outside of emergency situations is something I never take for granted. The support and investment of this community show our fire department is deeply appreciated, and I can only hope to continue serving you with the highest level of professionalism, dedication, and care.”

Thank you Evan, for everything you do for this community. Your time, hard work, and sacrifices do not go unnoticed and are extremely appreciated.

Firefighter Spotlight of the Month!!

Want to get to know your community firefighters a little better? This month, we are proud to spotlight Chief Erick Brittain!

Chief Brittain joined Grant County Fire District 7 last year and is now approaching the completion of his first full year with the department. Reflecting on his experience so far, he shared, “This first year has been a lesson in humility. As I like to say, ‘if you’ve seen one department, you’ve seen one department.’” He emphasized how quickly he came to appreciate that GCFD7 is more than just a workplace. It’s a family that truly puts the community first.

“My favorite moments have been mentoring, but also participating in community events,” he said. Chief Brittain highlighted how meaningful these events are, offering the department a chance to step out of “emergency mode” and simply be part of the neighborhood.

We also asked Chief Brittain about his path prior to GCFD7 and what first inspired him to become a firefighter. “I’ve always believed that the highest calling is to be there for others on their toughest days,” he explained. Rather than seeking excitement, he was drawn to the opportunity to be a steady presence, a calm voice, and helping hand for his neighbors in times of need.

Originally an education major in college, Chief Brittain’s path shifted when a friend encouraged him to volunteer at a local fire department. “I loved it and quickly changed my major to paramedicine. The rest is history.”

When asked about the calls that have stayed with him, Chief Brittain noted, “It’s rarely the big fires that stick with me, it’s the quiet moments.” He shared a memory of holding the hand of an elderly woman while waiting for a transport unit. “We didn’t talk much, but in that moment, my only job was to make sure she didn’t feel alone. That connection is why I do this.”

He added that these “invisible wins” are often the most rewarding part of the job. The look of relief from a parent when crews arrive, or the opportunity to mentor a new recruit and watch them discover their own passion for service. “Knowing we’ve helped a team succeed, in my opinion, is our greatest accomplishment as leaders.”

While many know him simply as Chief Brittain, he also enjoys a full life outside of the department. When off duty, he focuses on staying grounded and ready to serve. That includes spending quality time with his family, rediscovering his love of golf at the local course, and enjoying the outdoors through hiking and boating. He also admits to occasionally indulging in some “less than perfect” karaoke with his family.

To close, we asked Chief Brittain if he had a message for the community:
“We are here for you, but we are also part of you. Our strength comes from your trust. Please know that when you call us, you are never ‘bothering’ us. It is our genuine privilege to step into your world and help carry the load, no matter how small the problem may seem.”

Wildfires can start fast and spread even faster—especially in the dry, windy conditions of the Columbia Basin. Taking simple steps now can protect your home, your family, and your community.

What you can do today:

• Clear dry grass, brush, and debris at least 30 feet from your home
• Keep gutters and roofs free of leaves and needles
• Move firewood and flammable materials away from structures
• Know multiple evacuation routes from your neighborhood
• Sign up for local emergency alerts by texting GCSHERIFF to 888777 (for incidents in unincorporated Grant County and cities patrolled by the Sheriff's Office)

If a wildfire happens

• Follow evacuation orders immediately—don’t wait
• Stay informed through official sources
• Check on neighbors who may need help

Wildfire awareness isn’t just for firefighters—it’s everyone’s responsibility. Prepared communities are safer communities.

Today, on International Firefighters’ Day, I want to take a moment to recognize and thank the brave men and women who put their lives on the line to protect our communities.

Firefighters run toward danger when everyone else is running away. They show up in our worst moments with courage, strength, and compassion. Ready to help, no matter the cost. Their dedication doesn’t go unnoticed, and their sacrifices deserve more gratitude than words can fully express.
