We just returned home from a whirlwind trip to KC for the first KCAI Endowment Luncheon. It was a lovely trip and very informative.

We had a wonderful dinner with Maura Cluthe, the Head of the Illustration Department, to discuss plans for the next Simply Kitts Foundation Art Show. We're looking at some gallery options on or close to campus this time to, hopefully, draw in current and past Illustration students as well as more people from the community. Depending on availability we are hoping to do the show in the Fall of 2026. As soon as we have details on a location and dates we will put out a call for artists.

The following day we attended the KCAI Endowment Luncheon which provided a lot of interesting information regarding the endowments KCAI has. It also gave us the opportunity to meet the current Institute President and the interim Vice President of Institutional Advancement, Chadwick Brooks, who is in charge of the various endowments.

KCAI has a fairly small endowment list and very few that are given directly to students. It made us feel very proud to discover just how much our scholarship endowment means to the Illustration department and the students who have received it. I think it is the only endowment specifically for illustration students. It is so good to know that we are making a difference and it has energized us to push harder in the hopes of helping even more students meet their educational and artistic potential.

This past weekend was Phoenix Fan Fusion, a convention I helped Kitt vend at a couple of times. John and I went last year and had a good time and decided to go again this year. I'm not the comic book nerd he and Kitt are/were, but I go to spend time with him doing something he enjoys. This year two of the stars from the TV show Firefly were going to be there, Gina Torres and Alan Tudyk. Cool! I really liked the show and loved the idea of being able to see them from afar then thought nothing more about it.

John later suggested that I should take the print Kitt did as a commission in 2017 that was a crossover piece featuring Firefly and Futurama to see if they would autograph it as a fundraiser for the Foundation. After mulling it over I decided to do it.

The first autograph I went for was Ms. Torres who was a beautiful, loving, empathetic person. She commented on the awesomeness of the print as soon as she saw it. I explained to her the background of the print, Kitt and the creation of the Simply Kitts Scholarship Foundation. With tears in her eyes, she not only happily donated her autograph to the cause she asked for hugs from both John and I along with pictures. We greatly appreciate that she even included them in her Instagram post.

Since Mr. Tudyk had some travel difficulties and arrived at the convention late I opted to try for his autograph the following day. Timing was more difficult and we did not get the opportunity to speak with him as we would have liked, but his manager did promise to get a signature for us and relate to him later the history of the Foundation and the cause he was supporting. He had a ready smile and seemed like a really awesome person and seemed like he really wanted to talk, but we had made a promise to his manager that we would not tell him the story as it would lead to questions and then he would not be able to get through the line and to lunch before his next set of obligations. While disappointed, we understood and appreciated his willingness to work with us.

Now I have a challenge.....

I'm going to be working to get the autographs of as many of the lead characters of Firefly, as well as the voice actors for Fry and Leela, as I can. Then we will be auctioning off the print as a fundraiser for the Foundation. I'm not sure how long that will take as I have to decide how much traveling I'm willing to do to get access to everyone, but I will keep you all posted as things progress.

More pictures below in the comments.

Thank you so much to Gina Torres and Alan Tudyk!

Just got a letter from Amazon yesterday saying they're closing down their AmazonSmile program. How sad. So much for the help they did provide to the smaller nonprofits.

"In 2013, we launched AmazonSmile to make it easier for customers to support their favorite charities. However, after almost a decade, the program has not grown to create the impact that we had originally hoped. With so many eligible organizations—more than 1 million globally—our ability to have an impact was often spread too thin.

We are writing to let you know that we plan to wind down AmazonSmile by February 20, 2023. We will continue to pursue and invest in other areas where we’ve seen we can make meaningful change—from building affordable housing to providing access to computer science education for students in underserved communities to using our logistics infrastructure and technology to assist broad communities impacted by natural disasters.

To help charities that have been a part of the AmazonSmile program with this transition, we will be providing them with a one-time donation equivalent to three months of what they earned in 2022 through the program, and they will also be able to accrue additional donations until the program officially closes in February. Once AmazonSmile closes, charities will still be able to seek support from Amazon customers by creating their own wish lists.

As a company, we will continue supporting a wide range of other programs that help thousands of charities and communities across the U.S. For instance:

Housing Equity Fund: We’re investing $2 billion to build and preserve affordable housing in our hometown communities. In just two years, we’ve provided funding to create more than 14,000 affordable homes—and we expect to build at least 6,000 more in the coming months. These units will host more than 18,000 moderate- to low-income families, many of them with children. In one year alone, our investments have been able to increase the affordable housing stock in communities like Bellevue, Washington and Arlington, Virginia by at least 20%.
Amazon Future Engineer: We’ve funded computer science curriculum for more than 600,000 students across over 5,000 schools—all in underserved communities. We have plans to reach an additional 1 million students this year. We’ve also provided immediate assistance to 55,000 students in our hometown communities by giving them warm clothes for the winter, food, and school supplies.
Community Delivery Program: We’ve partnered with food banks in 35 U.S. cities to deliver more than 23 million meals, using our logistics infrastructure to help families in need access healthy food – and we plan to deliver 12 million more meals this year alone. In addition to our delivery services, we’ve also donated 30 million meals in communities across the country.
Amazon Disaster Relief: We’re using our logistics capabilities, inventory, and cloud technology to provide fast aid to communities affected by natural disasters. For example, we’ve created a Disaster Relief Hub in Atlanta with more than 1 million relief items ready for deployment, our Disaster Relief team has responded to more than 95 natural disasters, and we’ve donated more than 20 million relief products to nonprofits assisting communities on the ground.
Community Giving: We support hundreds of local nonprofits doing meaningful work in cities where our employees and their families live. For example, each year we donate hundreds of millions of dollars to organizations working to build stronger communities, from youth sport leagues, to local community colleges, to shelters for families experiencing homelessness.

We’ll continue working to make a difference in many ways, and our long-term commitment to our communities remains the same—we’re determined to do every day better for our customers, our employees, and the world at large.

Thank you for being an Amazon customer."
