Snowflake and Taylor are great examples of service as displayed in the annual school cleanup service project and historically displayed through the sacrifice of building the Academy to have secondary education available locally.

We would love to see the community out at the Snowflake & Taylor Night of Service this Wednesday. All community members are welcome. If you don’t belong to one of the churches below, just show up to your favorite school.

Did you know the Academy Building is also known as the Peterson Building? It was named after Joseph Peterson who contributed significantly to the Snowflake Stake Academy and to all of Navajo County. He first came to Snowflake in 1898 and taught school until 1906 when he then moved to Lakeside to homestead. He served in the Territorial Legislation in Phoenix during this time. He returned to Snowflake to teach in 1909 until 1914. He then was elected as Navajo County Superintendent from 1914 to 1920 and moved to Holbrook. He then served as County Supervisor. He eventually returned to Snowflake High School in 1924 and taught for 16 more years. Here is a picture from his days as an educator with students surrounding him. Peterson's legacy and impact can still be felt today in Snowflake and the surrounding communities. Please consider helping renovate the Academy Building in honor of Peterson and so many others who sacrificed so much to make sure a quality education was available. And please let us know if you recognize any of these students. Thank you!

Aleda Willis and Caroline Lundquist, both born 1898, are here standing in front of the Academy building in an undated photo. Note the upper left window is still not installed so this picture might be close to the dedication in 1913. That would make them both possible pupils being around 15 years old each. Please share photos you might have of the Academy building for us to share. And please consider donating to help renovate the old high school.

I am not sure on the date of this picture of the student body and faculty. Any ideas or information? Since the Academy building was completed in 1913, my best guess is 1913 or soon thereafter.
