Snohomish Carnegie Foundation

Snohomish Carnegie Foundation The Snohomish Carnegie Foundation is a citizen-based organization that works with the City of Snohomish in its effort to restore the 1910 Carnegie Library.

The Snohomish Carnegie Educational Center is located in one of Washington State's last-remaining historic Carnegie libraries. Its original construction represents the efforts of Snohomish's early residents and the Carnegie Foundation, which funded libraries throughout the country from 1886 to 1923, to build a new facility. The building is located within the Snohomish City National Register Histori

c District. Located strategically at the intersection of the Snohomish historic business district and residential areas, the SCEC has been the hub of our community in years past, and it promises to fulfill this role again as the revitalization of our historic city continues to evolve. Restoration of the grounds will provide a much-needed gathering space for our entire community, whether it be for art in the park, our Farmer’s Market, or for spending contemplative time honoring those lives lost in the service of our nation.

ANNOUNCEMENT: The partnership has secured over $1 million in funding to complete the first phase of the project - the seismic retrofit of the building to ensure safe structure. A balance of $13,000 remains to be funded. A donor from the community has generously offered a one-to-one match for each donation up to a total of $6,500. This means that when the Foundation raises $6,500, the donor will issue a check to the foundation for $6,500, thus totaling $13,000 in secured funding.

The Snohomish Carnegie Foundation welcomes your donation to help us with the initial phase of creating this public gathering space. Thanks in advance for your support and thanks to the donor for this generous offer!

UPDATE:

In early August 2012, the City of Snohomish and the Snohomish Carnegie Foundation are scheduled to begin the seismic retrofit of the Carnegie Library Building. This work, to last until February 2013, will ensure the stability of the structure during a natural disaster. While the retrofit is on-going, the Foundation will be working to generate funding to support the second phase of the Carnegie rehabilitation – that of removing the 1968 Annex Building, restoring the front facade of the Building, and restoring the much-loved (and often photographed in the past) front entrance to the Carnegie. The restoration of the entrance has been eagerly awaited by many in the City of Snohomish, because it symbolizes the return of the historic building to the community. Total cost for this second phase is estimated to be $400,000. This includes architectural and engineering design, hazardous materials abatement, demolition of the Annex Building, electrical work, new entry stairs and new entry doors. We invite you to join us in our fundraising efforts, and we will proudly give you recognition in our Carnegie Collection Library Shelves, honoring our donors.
