How far have we come? So many people say, "Get over it!" "It's been 400 years ago!" "You are just using this as an excuse." But truly it has not been long ago that many of us have experienced injustice at a high level. Many of us can say our parents were sprayed with hoses and had dogs attack them. Chattel slavery may have been generations ago but social constructs that promote slavery tactics still live systemically. We are moving in the right direction but we need to continue to be empowered, use our voices and take productive long-term action for change!

1965- Malcom X assassinated
1965- Voting Rights Act
1966- Black Panthers formed under Bobby Seale and Huey Newton
1968- Martin Luther King Jr. assassinated
1969-Black Theology & Black Liberation Theology founded by Dr. James Cone
1969- Black Manifesto A demand for reparations from white churches and synagogues by James Forman.
1970's- Black Power Movement loses much of it's momentum due to government plots.
1983- MLK established as a national holiday
1990's- Los Angeles riots, Dr. Mae Jemison in space, Carol Mosely Braun in Senate
1999- unarmed Amadou Diallo is shot by police in New
York
2008- Barack Obama first African American elected as President
2012- Barack Obama re-elected
2020- Black Lives Matter movement on worldwide stage after multiple police killings of unarmed African American men and women; "I. Can't. Breathe."
2021- Kamala Harris is the first African American sworn in as Vice President.
