Congratulations to Julie and George, recipients of this month’s Yard of the Month award! Their charming landscape is filled with beautiful bushes, colorful flowers, and whimsical yard art that meanders gracefully throughout the property, creating a warm and welcoming retreat.

Originally moving to Sneads Ferry from New Bern 22 years ago, they began with what was essentially a blank slate. Much of the inspiration behind their garden came from Julie’s mother-in-law, an avid gardener from Kinston, who would arrive for visits with a car full of plants and bulbs lovingly shared from her own beautiful yard. Her generosity, guidance, and passion for gardening helped shape the landscape into what it is today.

Over the years, with encouragement and plant-sharing from gardening friends, the yard steadily flourished. Julie describes her gardening philosophy as “only the strong survive,” choosing plants that can truly thrive in our coastal growing conditions. Thanks to that practical and resilient approach, the garden now largely sustains itself, requiring only the occasional new addition to complete a space.

Their yard is a wonderful example of how patience, shared generosity, and a love of gardening can create something truly special for the community to enjoy.

JULY YARD OF THE MONTH

This garden is the heart and handiwork of Lisa Fuller, lovingly created at the home she shares with her parents, Terry and Mark Petrazio.

Last August, we purchased this home and began the rewarding process of grooming and shaping what was already here. Since then, we’ve planted new edging, added fragrant lemon grass and lavender, and slowly watched the landscape come to life.

One of my favorite touches is the flower bed border, made from seashells I’ve collected over many years. Each shell holds a memory, and it’s special to finally have a place where they can be enjoyed every day.
