About Us

The Young Marines of the Marine Corps League is a national youth program for boys and girls ages 8 through the completion of high school. We are dedicated to "strengthening the lives of America's youth" and encouraging children "to live a healthy, drug-free lifestyle." Our unit, the Rutherford County Young Marines, strives to achieve these objectives in our local community through monthly drills and community service.

Drills consist of physical fitness activities such as running, calisthenics, and team sports; field activities; DDR (Drug Demand Reduction) training; leadership training via classroom instruction, based on our program's four Young Marine guidebooks; and military discipline in the form of uniform inspections and close order drill.

The unit is led by a dedicated staff of registered adult volunteers and the Young Marines themselves.

Youths join our unit during our enlistment period, usually held twice per year. The only requirements to join the unit are that the youth is between 8 and 18 years old and is in good standing in school. The youth enters recruit training--which we call "boot camp"--where he or she will earn the title "Young Marine." After recruit training, Young Marines participate in drills that help them earn rank and ribbons as they progress through the program. Young Marines have the opportunity to participate in national schools, such as Junior, Senior, and Advanced Leadership School, and SPACES.
