Ray Miller was a leader and pillar of this community. He will be missed by all whom he touched.

The King Arts Complex joins the community in honoring the life and legacy of former Ohio Senator Ray Miller, a dedicated public servant, community leader, and champion for equity and opportunity.

Born in Hampton, Virginia, Ray Miller made Columbus his home and graduated from Columbus East High School. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in public administration from The Ohio State University. Before entering elected office, Miller served as Vice President of Columbus State Community College and as a Deputy Special Assistant to President Jimmy Carter. His legislative career began in the Ohio House of Representatives in 1981, where he served for 16 years before returning to the House in 1999. In 2003, he was elected to the Ohio Senate, representing the 15th District, and later served as Senate Minority Leader. He continued his career with the Columbus African American News Journal, using his voice and platform to highlight Black achievement, community issues, and the people shaping Central Ohio.

Throughout his years of service, Senator Miller worked to uplift communities, advocate for families, and create greater opportunities for future generations. His commitment to public service and his impact on Central Ohio will continue to be remembered. We are grateful for his contributions to our community and the legacy he leaves behind.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and all who were touched by his life and service. May his legacy of service, leadership, and community continue to inspire us all.
