“A Prophetic Word”
Day 14: When faced with temptation, speak the word.
Jesus had just been baptized and had been confirmed by the voice of His Father in heaven.
“Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heavens were opened, and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.””
Luke 3:21-22 ESV
No sooner had His baptism taken place, the Holy Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness to be tested by the devil.
“And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry.”
Luke 4:1-2 ESV
For 40 days, Jesus had not eaten, and He had become extremely hungry. At this juncture, the devil saw his opportunity to get Jesus to prove Who He was.
“And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry. The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.””
Luke 4:1-3 ESV
Yes, Satan wanted to provoke Jesus to turn a stone into bread to satisfy His immense hunger. Well, Jesus was having none of it and met Satan’s temptation with the word of God.
“But Jesus answered him, saying, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’ ””
Luke 4:4 NKJV
Having been rebuffed, Satan decides to offer another type of temptation. This time, the temptation was to be given power, the “easy” way (“easy” because this most certainly would have preempted His suffering and dying on the cross).
“And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, and said to him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.””
Luke 4:5-7 ESV
Yet again, Jesus refused, offering only what God had said, as His defense against this new temptation.
“And Jesus answered him, “It is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.’””
Luke 4:8 ESV
Then, for a third time, Satan, not willing to be so easily dispatched, offered another temptation. This time, determining that two could play at the “game” of using God‘s word, Satan brings a temptation wrapped in the word of God.
“And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,’ and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’””
Luke 4:9-11 ESV
Jesus, not being tripped up by Satan‘s deceptive use of the word of God, again refuses to walk into the temptation being offered.
“And Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’””
Luke 4:12 ESV
With Jesus’ third refusal to enter into the temptation offered by Satan, Satan departed, to wait for another opportunity to lead Jesus into temptation.
“And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time.”
Luke 4:13 ESV
Three times, Satan attempted to appeal to a potential weakness common to all mankind. Indeed, John speaks of these 3 types of temptations.
“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.”
1 John 2:15-17 ESV
Satan appealed to the lust of the flesh by trying to exploit Jesus’ severe hunger.
Satan then tried to appeal to the lust of the eyes (what is seen as desirable), by showing Jesus all the kingdoms of the world, and then offering to give all of them to Him.
Finally, Satan tried to appeal to one last potential weakness: the pride of life, by offering Jesus the opportunity to show how great He was by being able to jump from such a high place without being hurt.
Paul instructed that even though our personal temptations seem very hard to resist, we are not facing something others have not faced.
“The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.”
1 Corinthians 10:13 NLT
Yes, the Lord knows our limits and won’t allow us to be pushed beyond our ability to resist. Indeed, with each temptation, the Lord will provide a way to get out of it unscathed. But it won’t do us any good if we’re not paying attention to the leading of His Spirit.
Child of God, there are many reasons why we may struggle with temptation. For some, temptation is the result of opening doors to certain habits or desires, whether through active or passive participation.
Other temptation comes because there hasn’t been a vigilance in spirit: keeping watch over the state of our soul with prayer, holy living, and meditation on God‘s word.
However, we see the most common cause of temptation, illustrated in the temptation of Jesus. He was not guilty of any of the things before mentioned. But although He was all God, He was also all man. And as a man, He was subject to being able to hear the voice of the tempter, the devil himself.
If you really look closely at any temptation, you will see that it is a blatant attempt to get the believer to disobey the word of God. Therefore, the solution in the face of temptation, is to use the word as a weapon. This will only work if you are being obedient to the word yourself, and actually believe what you are saying. If you wield the word, knowing that it is from God’s mouth, and are assured of the power that is in it, you will see that the temptations that come your way will be conquered!
“So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
James 4:7 NLT
We humble ourselves before God by obeying what He has said. We are then able to successfully wield the sword of the Spirit, the word of God, as Jesus did when faced with the devil’s ploys.
Peace to you.
Jesus is coming! Get ready for Him!
