Recently, the Fall Creek Falls Veterans Hunt took place, and it was truly a success on every level.

With 15 hunters harvesting 10 deer, the numbers were strong—but what mattered most were the friendships formed, the stories shared, and the time spent together in the field. Experiences like this go far beyond the hunt itself.

A heartfelt thank you to Hero Hunt, Inc. Sarah Leedy and Matt Brown with Fall Creek Falls State Park; Bill Swan and Troy Nicholson with Jen Watson and her phenomenal tracking dogs; and -ClevelandStateStudentChapter along with Robert Brewer. Your dedication, teamwork, and support made this hunt—and the time together—successful in so many meaningful ways.

“I marked it with a stick!” Sometimes a hunter informs us trackers that they had marked the point of loss (POL) with a stick. You tell me which POL is easier to find? Photo A or Photo B?

So why is it important to mark the POL with something that can be easily seen?
* Easy to see, sometimes things look very different at night or if you happen to come in from a different direction.
* The area isn’t getting trampled up searching for the stick (which stick is it now) likely spreading the scent around much like a grid search, which isn’t good.
* It can be frustrating to both the hunter and the tracker.
* Time savings.
* Trust me, the tracker is really gonna appreciate it!

TP is an excellent marker, and if hung from a tree it can easily be seen from multiple directions. Not only is TP very visible in the woods, it’s relatively inexpensive, biodegradable, and is definitely a lot better than using leaves on the backside.
Don’t have TP, use something man-made. An arrow stuck in the ground works well, especially if it has a lighted nock that is activated.

While pinning the POL with your phone is an option, it’s not a great idea. Why not pin the POL?
* Inaccuracy, a pin can “float around” (move around on the screen). Therefore, the hunter and tracker end up inadvertently spreading the scent around while searching the POL.
* What happens if the phone battery happens to die? You have nothing at all then.

This unique smell is how tracking dogs know which deer to follow. When a deer is injured, it releases pheremones from this gland that provide information to the dog (or coyote) on how badly injured the animal is - if it is mortally wounded, the dogs prey drive locks in and will be super interested in following that unique track to the deer.

Sometimes an injured deer releases a bunch of pheromone leading a dog to initially think it is mortally wounded but as time goes on and the deer realizes he is not that hurt then the scent level drastically reduces and can explain why dogs may suddenly lose interest when the deer turns out to not be a dead deer walking

Super interesting!
