The DeKalb Soil & Water Conservation District is very happy to congratulate Luke Magness on his achievement in receiving the SWCD Scholarship. Although Luke was chosen as the recipient in April of 2024 based on his career goals and grade point average; he had to fulfill the SWCD’s requirements to earn this scholarship. The SWCD Board acknowledges, appreciates and looks forward to seeing Luke’s accomplishments in the future. Pictured from left to right are those who presented Lukes Scholarship to him on behalf of the DeKalb SWCD Board. Another 3rd grade Farm Day in the books. A huge THANK YOU! to Herndon Farms and Farm Bureau for hosting this event. Soil & Water Conservation District & the Natural Resource Conservation Service got to be a part of this fun day. Caleb Gulley and Makenzie Morton demonstrated a ‘Rain Simulator’ to 250 +/- students plus parents, teachers and other helpers. The Rain Simulator shows how we lose soil when the ground has been plowed or nothing is growing in it. It shows the importance of taking care of our water and soil. There were 17 stations students could learn from, some of these stations were participation stations. Plus, they got to go on a hayride to see a pond, cattle grazing, crop fields, and farm machinery. Among the stations there we had Forestry with Smokey the Bear, it is his 80th Birthday this year, so some of us got our picture with him. From left to right is Jimmy Herndon, Judy Sandlin, Pamela Hale, Smokey, Jessica Francis, Makenzie Morton, Genrose Davis and Zachary Fuson.
