At 5:24 AM this morning, the Smithtown Fire Department was dispatched for an accident involving a train and a tree that had fallen across the tracks.

The train struck a large tree just east of the Smithtown train station, causing damage to the engineer’s compartment. One person was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Units operated under the command of Assistant Chief Palazzo.

⚠️ The Port Jefferson Branch of the MTA Long Island Rail Road 🚉 is experiencing delays and cancellations due to this incident. Please check the MTA website for the latest service updates before traveling.

With the potential for severe thunderstorms today, including heavy rain, damaging wind gusts, and the possibility of downed trees and power lines, residents are urged to stay weather aware. If you don’t need to travel during the worst of the weather, consider delaying your trip. Never drive through flooded roadways, stay away from downed power lines, and monitor the latest forecast throughout the day.

Last week, one member of the Smithtown Fire Department Explorer Program attended Camp Fahrenheit 516, hosted at the Nassau County Fire Service Academy.

Tyler, a member of our Explorer Program, was one of 49 attendees who participated in the week-long camp, representing more than 28 junior firefighter programs from across Long Island. Throughout the week, campers completed hands-on training similar to what new firefighters experience when entering the fire academy. Training topics included fire behavior, ground ladders, fire extinguishers, vehicle extrication, hand tools, and many other firefighting skills.

Camp Fahrenheit 516 provides young men and women with an outstanding opportunity to develop their knowledge, sharpen their skills, and prepare for a future in the fire service.

Congratulations to Tyler and all of the campers who participated, and thank you to the Nassau Juniors, NCFSA and the many instructors who dedicated their time to making this incredible program possible.

The Smithtown Fire Department Explorer Post 420 is open to residents ages 14–17 who have an interest in fire and EMS. Explorers train regularly on Friday evenings and also participate in monthly meetings, parades, fundraisers, and many other department activities.

🎅☀️ CHRISTMAS IN JULY IS BACK! ☀️🎅

Mark your calendars and join the Smithtown Fire Department on Saturday, July 25th for an afternoon of summer fun and holiday cheer!

Our annual Christmas in July Parade kicks off at 12:00 PM, followed by an opportunity to meet Santa in person at 12:30 PM at Uncle Giuseppe's Marketplace Shopping Center on Route 111 in Smithtown.

Santa will be handing out candy canes and leis, and will make a special announcement revealing the official date of the 2026 Smithtown Fire Department Christmas Parade!

At 4:53pm, the Smithtown Fire Department was requested to provide mutual aid to the Commack Fire Department for a technical rescue involving a person trapped between the cab and trailer of a tractor-trailer behind the Target store on Veterans Memorial Highway.

Smithtown units including Rescue 4-2-19, Engine 4-2-4, Chief of Department 4-2-30, and Assistant Chief 4-2-33 responded to assist Commack members with the technical rescue as part of a mutual aid policy for these types of alarms.

Firefighters and SCPD ESU successfully extricated the patient, who was then transported by Commack Volunteer Ambulance Corps to a local hospital in serious condition.

It was a busy calendar week for your Smithtown Fire Department.

From Sunday, July 5 through Saturday, July 11, the Department responded to 106 emergency calls, including:

• 7 structure fires
• 2 working structure fires
• 6 cardiac arrests
• 4 motor vehicle accidents
• 2 vehicle-into-building incidents
• 1 vehicle fire

3-Alarm House Fire with Burn Victim

On Saturday, July 11 at 5:56 PM, the Smithtown Fire Department was activated by Smithtown Fire Rescue Communications for a reported house fire on Oakside Drive.

Assistant Chief Palazzo was the first arriving unit and reported a working fire with a victim suffering from severe burns on the front lawn of the residence, immediately requesting a forthwith EMS response. Firefighters arrived to find the majority of the home heavily involved in fire.

Crews deployed numerous handlines and master streams to battle the blaze while contending with multiple structural collapses. The fire escalated to a 3-alarm response, bringing together more than 100 firefighters from numerous neighboring departments. After over 3½ hours of operations, the fire was declared under control at approximately 9:35 PM.

One civilian was transported to a local hospital with severe burns and one additional civilian was transported with minor injuries. One firefighter was also transported with minor injuries.
All operations were conducted under the command of Chief of Department Dongvort. The scene was later turned over to the Smithtown Department of Public Safety Fire Marshals and the Suffolk County Police Arson Squad, who are investigating the cause of the fire.

We extend our sincere gratitude to all of our mutual aid partners and standby crews who assisted throughout this incident and ensured coverage for our district during the prolonged operation. During the fire, crews also responded to multiple automatic fire alarms, a cardiac arrest, a gas leak, and numerous EMS calls.

Another day, another car vs. building.

At 4:23 p.m., the department received numerous calls reporting a vehicle into a building at either the Chick-fil-A or the Speedway gas station on Route 347 in Smithtown.

Units arrived to find that a Jeep Wagoneer had accelerated and struck another vehicle, traveled through a fence, and came to rest against the Speedway gas station building and a dumpster after the driver suffered an apparent medical emergency.

First-arriving units, along with Suffolk County Police Department personnel, assisted the occupants from the vehicle, stabilized the patients, and secured the vehicle. EMS crews evaluated two patients, both of whom were transported to a local hospital.

Damage to the building was minor, and the scene was turned over to police for vehicle removal and investigation. All units operated under the command of Captain Migliorise.

And don’t worry—Chick-fil-A is still open; you may just have to use the carryout window for the next few hours.

They say no two calls are ever the same—and this one certainly proved it.

At 6:59 p.m., numerous calls were received for a motor vehicle accident in the vicinity of Route 347 and Plaisted Avenue. An Ex-Chief quickly arrived on scene and reported a confirmed vehicle into a residence, one block away from the original crash location.

Members found a debris field at Route 347 and Plaisted Avenue, with a trail leading down Plaisted Avenue, narrowly missing a home there before passing through two fences and a shed, ultimately striking the rear of a residence on Adrienne Lane.

Firefighters secured and stabilized the vehicle, which had caused significant structural damage to the residence on Adrienne Lane and torn the electrical service from the home. A gasoline leak from the damaged shed was also mitigated.

Fortunately, no occupants of the residence were injured. EMS personnel treated and transported the two occupants of the vehicle to a local hospital. All fire department operations were under the command of Assistant Chief Kelly. The scene was subsequently turned over to the Suffolk County Police Department, Smithtown Department of Public Safety Fire Marshals, and the Town of Smithtown Building Department.
