More Than “Just a Runaway”

When a young person runs away, it’s important to ask What happened? instead of What’s wrong with them?

More Than “Just a Runaway” is a short film that centers the voices and lived experiences of youth who have run away. Narrated by Safe Harbour staff, the film reflects what youth have shared about why they ran away, what they experienced during that time, and what they wish the adults in their lives had done when they returned home.

For many youth, running away is not simply an act of defiance, it can be a response to trauma, abuse, conflict at home, unmet needs, or exploitation. By listening without judgment and responding with compassion, we can help create opportunities for healing, safety, and connection.

We invite you to watch, reflect, and consider how each of us can better support youth when they need us most.
