Student Leadership Day in Kentucky

11 students from Livingston Central High School traveled to Frankfort, KY to meet with legislators to advocate for our local Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs as well as for continued support and funding for all CTE in Kentucky. Each student who attended represented their respective Career & Technical Student Organizations (CTSO). Livingston sent delegates from FBLA, FCCLA, FFA, HOSA, and SkillsUSA.

Students enjoyed meeting with the legislators who were just as excited to learn about them and their future plans. KY SKillsUSA State Parliamentarian and Chaplain (Madison and Hunter) also attended training sessions with other state officers to prepare for a day at the Capitol. The students also toured the Kentucky History Museum.

Washington Leadership Training Institute was a success! We ended the final session with Awards. The National Statesman is the highest award members and advisors can receive. It takes weeks of preparation, online prep work and an interview process. All 3 Livingston County delegates achieved the award at WLTI.

Our Kentucky State officers had a productive Day 3 & 4. Day 3 - we were able to tour our nation’s capital and end the day interviewing for the national Statesman. Day 4 - The day began by visiting Arlington National Cemetery and giving a wreath for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We also visited and paid respect to President Kennedy’s grave and saw the Eternal Flame. Then, over 560 SkillsUSA students and advisors descended on the Capitol for a day of advocating for CTE and Perkins funding. The day will end with Awards to see who earned their Statesman.

Our group met with staffers for Senator Rand Paul and Senator Mitch McConnell. We are doing our part to ensure that Kentucky stands firmly behind Perkins V and advocating for increased future support, to not just keep programs going but to innovate and increase CTE across the Commonwealth.

Enjoy our photos. We will return to the Bluegrass State tomorrow!

Our Kentucky State Officers have had a busy 2 days in Washington, DC. They have learned the importance of advocating and how to advocate for results. On Tuesday, they will attend meetings with legislators and staffers on Capitol Hill, to advocate for Career and Technical Education.

Enjoy the scenes from our nation’s capital. We have a day of sightseeing tomorrow.
