Smithfield Kentucky

Smithfield Kentucky City of Smithfield PO Box 22 Smithfield, KY 40068 845-6260 History
In the early 1800s there was a settlement in this area some believe was called “Jerusalem”.

About 1850, Thomas Smith, the first Henry county millionaire, was responsible for a railroad being built through this site which brought much industry and activity to the area. The settlement was then named “Smithfield” in honor of Mr. Smith. During its early years, Smithfield was home to three grocery stores (where one could purchase about anything), a train depot, millinery and blacksmith shops.

You could visit Fendley Flats apartments , schools, a college, the bank or doctor offices and drug store, then catch up on local gossip at the telephone exchange. Smithfield was no stranger to industry boasting a furniture, broom and chewing gum factories, a h**p mill and a feather processing plant. The Smithfield Cemetery was formed in May of 1865 and electric came to town in 1919. The first street lights were turned on in 1921 which lighted the sidewalks laid in 1913. The Smithfield Milling Company was established in 1896 and was in operation until 1986. You can still get a taste of days gone by at
