Please look at the statistics below. They are heartbreaking, alarming, and impossible to ignore.

June is Month, and every year we see the same headlines, the same statistics, and the same expressions of concern. But concern alone isn’t enough.

We need ACTION.

We need to become comfortable having uncomfortable conversations.

We need to ask the hard questions.

We need to listen without judgment.

And we need to educate ourselves so we know how to help when someone is struggling.

Consider these realities:

▪️ 1 in 10 men are dealing with depression or anxiety right now, yet many will never seek help.

▪️ Men are nearly four times more likely to die by su***de than women.

▪️ Approximately 80% of all su***de deaths each year are men.

▪️ 40% of men have never talked to anyone about their mental health—not a friend, family member, doctor, or counselor.

These aren’t just statistics. They represent fathers, sons, brothers, husbands, friends, coworkers, and neighbors.

No one should have to live with the tragedy of losing someone to su***de or spend a lifetime asking “Why?”

Education is one of the most powerful tools we have in su***de prevention.

We encourage everyone to consider attending the FREE QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) Gatekeeper Training led by su***de prevention advocate Fonda Bryant, a 31-year survivor!

QPR teaches you how to recognize warning signs, start a conversation, and connect someone to help. You don’t need to be a mental health professional to save a life.

One conversation can save a life.

As the final slide says:

“Check on your boys. Ask twice. Mean it.”

Today is a very special day for NAMI of Johnston County!

Nineteen years ago, on June 10, 2007, a vision became a reality when Marilyn Lundin established this affiliate network!

What began as a commitment to bring education, support, advocacy, and hope to individuals and families affected by mental health conditions has grown into a lasting resource for our community.

For almost two decades, NAMI Johnston County has been a place where people can find understanding, connection, and support during some of life’s most difficult moments.

The fact that this organization continues to serve so many individuals and families today is a testament to Marilyn’s vision, dedication, and unwavering belief that no one should have to face mental health challenges alone.

We are also grateful for the leadership of our current President, Richard Anthony Callahan, who continues to move the organization forward while honoring the foundation that Marilyn built.

Together, with her support, our board members, volunteers, facilitators, and community partners, NAMI Johnston County remains committed to making a difference every single day.

And also special thanks to Barbara Digirolamo who has served as Director of Family Support Services and VP, Fundraising Lead for the last 10 years, whose dedication and community engagement has helped sustain NAMI Johnston County for many years.

Barbara has worked tirelessly to build relationships throughout the community, create meaningful fundraising opportunities, and ensure that the resources needed to support our mission are available.

Her efforts have helped make it possible for NAMI Johnston County to continue providing programs, support groups, education, and advocacy to those who need it most.

And a big milestone in 2026 as we gear up for our first NAMI walk in Clayton taking place on September 26 led by Barbara and Rich!

As we celebrate this 19-year milestone, we want to hear from you.

💚 Has NAMI Johnston County helped you or someone you love?

💚 Do you have a memory, story, or message of appreciation you’d like to share?

Please leave a comment below. Your story may inspire someone else to reach out for support, find hope, or realize they are not alone.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey over the last 19 years. Here’s to continuing the mission of education, support, advocacy, and hope for many years to come.

Happy 19th Anniversary, NAMI Johnston County! 💚
