Twenty-five years after the September 11 terror attacks, the way first responders prepare for — and recover from — critical incidents has been transformed.

Medics, law enforcement, and healthcare workers describe how 9/11 reshaped emergency response and how they take care of themselves after the worst days on the job. Molly Harrison has been a fire medic with Isle of Wight County Fire Rescue for decades. She says the job demands constant readiness.

"You just never know what you're gonna face. Just prepare for the worst day that you're ever gonna have and that somebody else is ever gonna have," Harrison said.

Hey everyone, we would like to extend our gratitude to our new followers on this page, particularly considering our seven-month hiatus from social media. Although our team dynamics have undergone some changes, Jeff and Molly have remained committed to our core objective of ensuring individuals are recognized and heard. Through attending classes, teaching, collaborating with other teams and clinicians, and focusing on people over the past seven months, we have stayed true to our mission. We are so grateful for our relationship we have with you and know you will do great things!

Huge congratulations to Master Firefighter/Paramedic Shawn Mehall on becoming Norfolk Fire Rescue’s first dedicated Peer Support Team Specialist.

For three years, he’s helped the Peer Support Team reduce stigma, provide confidential support, and strengthen resilience across NFR. In this new role, he’ll expand resources for members and their families and further support a healthier workforce.
