We had a great time leading a lecture and a field trip to teach about stream restoration through passive treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD) for the Institute for Learning in Retirement (ILR). Our field trip took place last Friday at the passive system SR114, which was built in 1995 and still functioning well to this day, particularly thanks to its recent rehab in 2023.

Exciting news! We’ve been selected as an American Water Charitable Foundation 2026 Water and Environment grantee, focusing on improving the water quality in the Mill Creek watershed just North of Strattanville, PA. This grant will allow us to continue the great work the Mill Creek Coalition has accomplished in restoring the watershed from the effects of abandoned mine land over the past several decades.

It's been great weather for live staking at the Bruin Borough Community Park, which we did this week to finish off a streambank stabilization project along Bear Creek. Its a neat park and a great place for trout fishing if you get a chance to visit!

It is with great sadness that we share this post about the passing of Dave Johnson who was one of the founders and loyal members of the SRWC and in recent years served as a board member and Vice-President of Stream Restoration Incorporated. If you did not know Dave, you missed out. The world would be a much better place if more people were like him. Please read the beautiful post from Jennings Environmental Education Center as well as the link to his obituary. He was truly a special individual. He will be missed but not forgotten.

The Student Symposium on the Environment is hosted each December by Westminster College to highlight environmental study, research, artistic expression, internships, and service work being done by students in the region. The SRWC is once again partnering with Westminster College who will be hosting the Student Symposium on the Environment, which will take place on December 4, 2025 from 5:30 to 9:00 PM. Please share with students who may be interested in participating. The submission deadline is November 17, 2025.

See details on this hike in the Slippery Rock Watershed that will take you past 7 AMD passive systems. Happening this Saturday!

Our 30th Anniversary Celebrations are not quite over, as we have a hike schedule for this Saturday Oct 25th as part of SRWC's Anniversary. All are welcome!

Please join us at the Leonard Road NCT trailhead for a hike past 7 passively treated AMD discharges and 3 untreated AMD discharges. The Coalition designs, installs and maintains engineered passive treatment systems that annually keep 500 tons of metals and acids from flowing into Slippery Rock Creek. The hike is Out-Back, no shuttle. See the attached map for trailhead location and directions.

On Saturday October 4th, the SRWC will be celebrating our 30th anniversary and will have many family-fun and educational activities for all ages to enjoy. So please join us to help us celebrate! Information about the event is on this flyer.
