The Morgan Matthew Foundation (MMF) is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization created in honor of our son, Morgan. On a sunny, Saturday morning, we met the beautiful, big-eyed boy that would forever change our hearts and world. Morgan Matthew Theisen, "Big Mo," was born on June 26, 2021 – a head full of blonde hair, feet the size of Texas, 3 lbs. Under the incredible care of the Children’s Wisconsin

Fetal Concerns Center, NICU, and Herma Heart Institute CICU, Morgan was diagnosed with VACTERL Association, having several congenital anomalies: hemivertebrae (wedge-shaped vertebrae), a large VSD (hole between the lower two chambers of his heart), and esophageal atresia (esophagus not connected to his stomach). During his 82 days earthside, he experienced 2 surgeries, a myriad of lab tests, blood transfusions, and OE tube suctions, 11 days on ECMO life support, 26 days on the transplant list waiting for his perfect heart, many hours of story time with mom and dad, miraculous steps forward, and devastating steps back. Meeting Morgan, holding him, learning him, losing him, and loving him through it all has changed us, forever. He showed us the absolute best in humanity – and that gratitude, joy & light will always shine through even in the darkest heartbreak. One of our favorite ways to describe Mo is with a quote from the Hamilton musical: “You outshine the morning sun, my son.” Thank you for helping us ensure his brave, bright legacy shines forever, improving outcomes for infants like him and families like ours. They deserve a private island + a gazillion dollars. But we’ll start with cake pops… and a really big, from-the-bottom-of-our-hearts thank you ☀️

Thank you to Out of The Box for helping us celebrate the Children's Wisconsin NICU (💙🐻 IYKYK) and CICU nurses who gave us and so many others the most precious gift: time and memories with our loves.

It's a long post, but it's an important one: happy to the ones who help make so many families' worlds go ’round. ☀

Nurses. They are brilliant, relentless, deeply dedicated. They carry the technical expertise to save lives while never losing the compassion at the center of their work.

To us, they represent everything good. Their hearts were the seed that shaped and inspired our mission.

When we talk about improving outcomes for medically complex infants, there are many paths an organization can take. Supporting hospitals and care teams. Supporting families in the thick of it. Investing in research. It all matters.

For us, the decision to support NICU and CICU care teams specifically began with Morgan’s team, including his nurses, who showed up every day to fight for him. They had full lives of their own, yet in our room with our family, nothing else mattered.

To try to save a family you don’t know? Who doesn’t know you? We cannot ever forget what a miracle it is to have human beings like that in our corner. Who they are, and who they choose to be for others, is extraordinary.

Nurses cared for Morgan with brilliance and genuine love. And even more, they taught us how to care for him when we were scared, overwhelmed, and staring at umpteen tubes coming out of his tiny body. Wondering how to hold him. How to understand what was happening inside of him. How to make sure he feels our love.

They walked beside us through really complex and scary moments.

And the simple ones? They were there for those, too. The moments that live so sweetly in the corners of our mind forever, nurses were there right beside us.

They laughed with us.

They taught us how to change a diaper and wrap a swaddle.

They made footprint crafts.

They were the first to call us “Mom” and “Dad.”

And on that September night when we left room W303 for the last time, it was his nurse who promised that while carrying Morgan's earthly body to the morgue, she would tell him over and over how much he was loved.

All the moments you see in these pictures, and countless more that live in our hearts, nurses were there.

To the nurses we know and met through Mo, to the ones we've seen in passing, to the ones we may never meet:

so much of what we do is inspired by the gift you give to so many families. This world is brighter with you in it. Happy Nurses Day 🫶

Grateful (so very grateful!), today and every day, for Children's Wisconsin. ❤️

We made a pitstop this morning at Mo’s old stomping grounds to drop off some Special Kneads treats for the NICU/CICU staff that are working today. A small token of appreciation for the time they spend away from their own families to care for tiny, mighty warriors and the families who love them. What a blessing these special people, and their special hearts, are.

Our own hearts are feeling a bit heavy as we leave the Children’s campus. But dang… they’re really happy, and really full, too. Happy Thanksgiving, all 🥧☀️

Local MMF fam: bingo + bourbon + big love for baby Silas — this Thursday at Big Guys in Hartford! 💙

We first connected with this tiny, mighty heart warrior and his family here on social media — and later learned they’re local to our community. Since so many of you are local, too, we wanted to spread the word about the bingo night they are hosting to rally support. Every share, donation, and small gesture helps lift them through this fight.

Morgan’s godfather, Michael Thiede, is playing in the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association All-Star Charity Football Game this weekend— giving us one more opportunity to cheer on our favorite state champ, all while raising money for Children's Wisconsin alongside his teammates ☀

We love cheering Michael on from the stands, but we’re even more proud of the way he shows up off the field—especially when it comes to how he shares Mo's love & light with the world.
