🚨 SIZE MATTERS with Duck Box Entrances! 🦆
That’s right — in the world of wood duck conservation, the wrong hole size can ruin a whole season!
At Southern Quacker, we use a precision CNC router to carve every box with exact measurements because our feathered friends deserve the best real estate in the swamp!
👉 The Perfect Entrance Hole (3" high x 4" wide):
Big enough for a mama Wood Duck to slip in comfortably… but too small for bigger birds like the Black-bellied Whistling Duck. This keeps unwanted squatters out and gives our wood duck hens a safe, private condo for raising their fluffy ducklings!
👉 The Built-in Ladder:
Check out those perfectly routed horizontal grooves! These act like a custom staircase so those tiny day-old ducklings can climb almost 20 inches straight up to the exit. No ladder = trapped babies. Not on our watch!
We combine old-school cypress craftsmanship with modern CNC precision so every box we install in the Pearl River WMA actually works — helping more hens successfully raise families in our Louisiana wetlands.
Who knew conservation could be this technical… and this fun? 😄

🇺🇸 Memorial Day 2026 🇺🇸
Today, Southern Quacker Wildlife Conservation pauses to remember, honor, and give thanks for the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.
In the peaceful Pearl River wetlands of Louisiana, we reflect on the freedoms they defended — freedoms that allow us to protect and restore these vital habitats for future generations.
As we install nesting boxes and work to grow wood duck populations, we carry forward their legacy of stewardship and service to something greater than ourselves.
We remember. We honor. We are thankful.

Happy Mother’s Day from Southern Quacker Wildlife Conservation! 🦆💐

Today we’re wishing a very happy Mother’s Day to all the moms, grandmothers, bonus moms, and expecting mothers out there — including the hardworking wood duck hens already doing their part in the Pearl River wetlands.

During our recent box checks, we’re already seeing plenty of eggs in several nesting boxes, and even a few watchful mamas keeping an eye on their future flock. It’s a great reminder that every box matters, every wetland matters, and every little egg represents the next generation of Louisiana wildlife.

To all the moms raising families — feathered or not — we hope your day is full of love, appreciation, and maybe a little peace and quiet… unless you’ve got a nest full of kids, then good luck. 😂

Thank you to everyone who supports these conservation efforts and helps us keep these boxes going for our wood duck families.

Thank you, everyone! 🦆✨

Yesterday I asked what those flying visitors were swarming our Wood Duck Condo were — and you nailed it: Mayflies!

A huge shout-out to everyone who responded so quickly and helpfully. .

Here are a few fascinating facts about these delicate insects:

Mayflies (order Ephemeroptera) get their name from their incredibly short adult lives — many species live just 1–2 days as winged adults!

Their nymphs spend months (sometimes up to 2 years) underwater, making them excellent indicators of water quality. They are a true bellwether for healthy waterways. Mayflies are highly sensitive to pollution and low oxygen levels.

Seeing them in abundance, like we are here in the Pearl River wetlands, is a strong sign of clean, well-oxygenated water — exactly the kind of habitat our wood duck families need!

Nature is full of these small but powerful signals. Every time we install and monitor these nesting boxes, we’re not just helping ducks — we’re protecting an entire interconnected ecosystem.
If you’d like to sponsor a duck box and put your name (or a loved one’s) on one of these conservation tools in the Pearl River WMA, visit southernquacker.org or DM us. Your support helps us install more boxes and keep these healthy wetlands thriving.

Doing some duck box checking. Came across this box with a different type of flying visitor. They seem very happy to hang out on the outside - not sure I would want them hanging out on my house. Anyone know what kind of bugs are?

🦆 MISSING: Box 21019
Last Seen: Pearl River WMA – April 22–27, 2025

Box 21019, we barely got to know you.
Installed on April 22nd with such high hopes, you were gone just five days later. We envisioned you providing a safe, dry home for wood duck hens and their ducklings for the next decade — potentially producing hundreds of wood ducks and helping restore our local wetlands.
Your sudden disappearance is a real setback, but we refuse to let it slow us down.
We will never stop looking — and we’re already preparing to replace you so nesting season isn’t missed.
Every box matters in our mission to support wood duck populations in the Pearl River WMA. Replacing just the box will cost us $80. A box like 21019 costs $200 (full predator-proof box, mounting, installation, and monitoring).
You can help bring a new Box 21019 back to the wetlands today.
👉 Visit our website to sponsor or donate toward its replacement: southernquacker.org
Every contribution — whether sponsoring the full box or giving what you can — goes directly to materials and conservation. No salaries, no overhead. Just ducks and habitat.
Comment “REBUILD 21019” below so we know you’re with us, and please share this post so it reaches more people who care about Louisiana wildlife.
Together, we’ll turn this loss into another success story for the flock.
Thank you for standing with us.

🦆 One Box - Many Flocks: The Story Behind Southern Quacker Wildlife Conservation

This weathered “Wood Duck Cajun Condo” has quite the story to tell.

Installed back in 2016 on private land right next to the Pearl River Wildlife Management Area, this was our very first wood duck nesting box — years before Southern Quacker Wildlife Conservation even existed.

Through multiple hurricanes, record floods, and Louisiana’s unpredictable weather, this sturdy cypress box has stood tall and delivered every single year. A safe, dry home for mama wood ducks and their fluffy ducklings, season after season.
That one box sparked everything we’re doing today. It showed us the real difference a well-designed nesting box can make in our wetlands — and inspired us to launch SQWC and scale up conservation efforts across the Pearl River WMA and beyond.
Today we’re installing and maintaining dozens more boxes in partnership with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, all while working toward our vision of 500 boxes producing thousands of wood duck chicks each year.
One box. One family of ducks at a time. Many flocks saved.

If you’d like to help us grow this impact — whether by sponsoring a new box, volunteering, or simply sharing our story — we’d love to have you join the flock!

Never been able to get this close. I guess our ducks are camera shy.
