Hey everyone! 🌱

As part of our Community Plant Share & Hurricane Relief Drive we’re also collecting supplies to help families prepare for hurricane season.

If you’re planning to come out to the plant share, we’d love it if you brought a small donation item for hurricane preparedness. We’ll be collecting items through May 15, then putting together preparedness kits that will be given out on May 23, right before hurricane season kicks off.

Items we’re looking for for family preparedness kits:
• Non-perishable food
• Flashlights
• Batteries
• Portable phone chargers / power banks
• First aid supplies
• Hygiene items (soap, toothpaste, wipes, etc.)
• Baby supplies (diapers, wipes, formula)
• Tarps or work gloves
• Water purification tablets or small water filters
• Duffel bags, backpacks, or sturdy bags to put supplies in

Items for animal kits:
• Pet food (dry or canned)
• Small bags of treats
• Collapsible water/food bowls
• Leashes, harnesses, or slip leads
• Kennels or carriers (if possible)
• Pet waste bags
• Pet wipes or grooming wipes
• Towels or small blankets

If you’ve been through storms before, what items do you always make sure to have ready? Drop them in the comments so we can build a bigger list together.

🌿Community Plant Share & Hurricane Preparedness Drive🌿

The Herbalists Without Borders – Gulf Coast Chapter will be hosting a Community Plant Share on March 24th at Saint August Maison, and we would love for you to join us!

Thanks to a generous donation, we currently have 22 cucumber starter plants available to share with the community. We are also hoping to have cherry tomato plants and other starters available as well. These plants are free to anyone who would like one while supplies last, and donations to support our ongoing community efforts are always appreciated.

For those who prefer to start from seed, we will also have a variety of seeds available for purchase, including medicinal herbs, fruits and vegetables, for anyone interested in beginning or expanding a garden this season.

Herbalists Without Borders is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to community herbalism, education, and mutual aid. Our Gulf Coast chapter works to strengthen community resilience by sharing herbal knowledge, plant resources, and supporting disaster preparedness initiatives.

🌱 Hurricane Disaster Kit Drive

From now through May 15th, we are collecting donations for Hurricane Disaster Relief Kits that we plan to assemble and distribute on May 23rd, ahead of the heart of hurricane season.

We will be preparing:
• General disaster support kits
• Pet-centered kits

If you would like to donate supplies or contribute toward these kits, please reach out or bring donations with you to the event.

Thank you for supporting community herbalism, preparedness, and mutual aid. Sharing plants, seeds, and resources helps grow stronger and more resilient communities. 🌿

Anyone growing muscadine grapes or interested in learning more about this fruit crop is invited to attend the Muscadine Field Day, hosted on Aug. 28 by Mississippi State University in Carriere!

The event takes place in the vineyard at the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station’s McNeill Unit. The event begins at 9 a.m. with an hour of instruction and questions and answers.

Eric Stafne, MSU Extension Service fruit crop specialist and MAFES researcher, is coordinating the event. He and Patricia Knight, director of horticulture research at the MAFES South Mississippi Branch Experiment Station in Poplarville, will welcome attendees on behalf of MSU. Blair Sampson, an entomologist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture – Agriculture Research Service, will discuss the threat of the spotted lanternfly. Then, Jermaine Perier, an MSU Extension entomologist, will discuss vineyard insect management.

Jenny Ryals, an MSU doctoral student in horticulture, will give an overview of the USDA Transition to Organic Partnership Program, and Haley Williams, an MSU doctoral student in horticulture, will discuss wine blends with fruit.

At 10 a.m., guests can explore the MSU vineyard on their own, tasting and gathering fruit to take home in the bag provided. Stafne will discuss passionfruit production, Ryals will demonstrate planting a grapevine, and Williams will answer questions about enology and winemaking equipment.

There is no cost to attend this event. Registration begins on-site at 8:30 a.m. on the day of the event. The McNeill Unit is located at 7 Ben Gill Road, Carriere, Mississippi, across the road from Jack’s Fish House on Highway 11.
