At the heart of Be Fierce & Kind® Canine’s mission is to ensure that the community is properly educated on assistance dog laws.

This means we often help governmental entities, businesses, and nonprofits educate their staff and volunteers on how to appropriately interact with service dogs.

Our favorite thing to do is to teach children and adults how to interact with assistance dogs (service or therapy dogs) and work alongside mental health professionals so they can properly educate and inform their clients on how to obtain an assistance animal.

"All rise for Judge Tubbs" Our first program was a courthouse program in the 22nd JDC to provide comfort and support to trauma affected children and grownups in Family Preservation Court. Safe to say, Tubbs put a lot of smiles on people's faces and helped comfort during stressful court hearings. Unfortunately for her, but fortunately for us, she never got to "judge" a case, but she's heard a lot of them!

Your donations can help us create more programs and provide therapy dogs in courthouses. Visit https://www.befierceandkind.com/be-fierce-kind-canine or send us a message for a donation link!

"Ah yes, that's it! That's the spot!" Part of our assisted living treatment plans to help enhance mobility for our friends we meet (so long as it's approved and safe to do so). Sometimes our dog is a teensy bit out of reach so our friends can stretch a little bit. If mobility is an issue, we will place our dog on a couch or chair next to the person and have them "massage" Tubbs paw-- this gets their digits moving, provides tactical therapy, and feels good for the pup!

Signs like this do not pertain to service dogs. However, the dog must be trained to perform work or tasks for their disabled handler to qualify.

If the dog is out of control (barking uncontrollably, defecating inside, aggressive to people or animals unprovoked), then the animal can be removed from the event. Even under the ADA.

We are thinking about bringing back merchandise to support our therapy dog nonprofit. What do you think? What would make you say, "Yes please!" Stickers, shirts, hats? The world is your oyster, but speak now or forever hold your peace!

Therapy dogs are great for assisted living homes. Not only do they provide comfort, they remind residents of their own pets. It allows them to reminisce, feel “younger”, and brings a smile to their face.

Our team visits resident facilities and memory care units 🏥

Here is an example of some tasks a service dog or particularly trained therapy dog (used with a certain population) can do. This video was set up after Tubbs, our Director Amber’s dog, had forced Amber to the floor because a sensory meltdown was incoming.

You’ll see Tubbs tap with her nose to ground then when that didn’t elicit a response, she uses her paw tap. Watch after as she sits with her back to Amber inching closer.

Our board of directors was hard at work for our Q2 board meeting today. We take turns having our meetings at members’ houses and today was Treasurer Trudy Shaddinger’s turn.

On the menu was:

💰 Celebrating meeting Q1’s fundraising goal (we doubled it!)

💻 Realigning our brand values, vision, and mission statement that we can’t wait to share with y’all throughout the month.

🕵️‍♂️ Coordinating community outreach and fundraiser events that we know y’all are going to love

🐕‍🦺 Growing our unique brand of canine assisted therapy to more pockets of the community that need healing in a compassionate and safe way.

🐝 We welcomed a new “board member”: BEE-atrice. She is also a stuffed toy our Secretary Raquel bought Tubbs 🤷‍♀️

Last week Southern Hotel ~ Covington, Louisiana and Love More Yoga hosted a benefit yoga class for our nonprofit. Thanks to them we were able to secure more funding to allow us to travel to schools and courthouses with our therapy dogs 🐕‍🦺💙✨

Want to host a benefit class or event for our 501c3? Reach out to any of our board members or message us here.

Did you know under the Americans with Disabilities Act, a service dog is not required to wear a vest, collar, or leash that says SERVICE DOG on them?

Most handlers do have the vest on the animal to indicate to the dog they are working. Some, like us, remove the vest when the dog is on a break so they can relax too. Typically this happens after an intense working session to allow the dog time to shake it off.
