Slatington’s new National Historic District banners were formally unveiled during a press conference and check presentation on Tuesday July 24 at Slatington Borough Hall. Northern Lehigh Future Focus (NLFF), a Slatington based community visioning group serving the Northern Lehigh area spearheaded the banner replacement project. In 2004, a large portion of Slatington was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. This register is the official list of our nation’s historic places worthy of preservation. In order to educate the public and promote the newly created historic district, as well as welcome visitors to Slatington, future focus began the original banner project in 2005, which resulted in the purchase and installation of 28 banners.
After 12 years and the effects of weather, the banners could no longer be displayed. Through the assistance of the Lehigh Valley Chamber Foundation in the form of a grant, the public’s response to an “Adopt a Banner” program, and funding from NLFF, 28 new banners now adorn the Main Street corridor in Slatington. The total cost of the replacement banners was $3,388.00. A new color motif was chosen for the banners that more closely matches the school colors of the Northern Lehigh School District. Downtown Graphics of Wilmington, North Carolina manufactured the banners, and the Slatington Borough Maintenance Crew installed the banners.
Northern Lehigh Future Focus would like to thank and recognize the following businesses, civic groups, and individuals who sponsored the replacement banners: Mr. & Mrs. David Altrichter, Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Bechtel, Betty Blose, Ed Donnelly & Beverly Zeiser, Marilyn Kaul, Slatington Lodge No.440- Free And Accepted Masons, Sule’s Collision Center, Inc., Mr. & Mrs. Tim Snyder, Steckel & Stopp –Attorneys at Law and the Woman’s Club of Slatington. Donations from the “Adopt a Banner” program totaled $1100. Also in attendance for the check presentation were members of the Lehigh Valley Chamber Foundation, and Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce. The chamber foundation presented a check to future focus totaling $1,694.00. NLFF extends a huge thank you to the Lehigh Valley Chamber Foundation for their continued support of community projects in Slatington and the entire Northern Lehigh area.
