When it’s 96° outside, there’s only one thing to do… take training to the water!

Our crew spent the day sharpening their skills with the NRS safety boat, practicing operations while finding a great way to beat the heat. Every training opportunity helps us become more prepared for the moments when our community needs us most.

Stay cool, stay hydrated, and enjoy the sunshine!
Have a safe and happy Fourth of July 🇺🇸

Congratulations Captain Caldwell on a well deserved retirement!!! Rick was one of our Charter members and was instrumental in the establishment of our Technical Rescue Team as well the driving force in our public education program, having an effect on generations of Somerset County residents. If Captain Caldwell has impacted your life in some way, come on over to the fire station tomorrow and let him know!

A former teacher who followed his dream of being a firefighter, Capt. Rick Caldwell worked his last shift as a full-time firefighter Thursday.

It’s been a busy and emotional 24 hours for first responders across the state.

Members of the Skowhegan Fire Department were proud to assist wherever needed. Crews participated in the honorary transfer from Augusta to Belfast, while additional crews responded to Searsmont to assist with suppression efforts during the tragic incident in Waldo County.

These moments serve as a reminder of how close-knit the fire service truly is across the state. Departments continue to stand shoulder to shoulder, supporting one another and the communities we serve in times of need.

We send our deepest condolences to all those affected by the tragedy in Waldo County, and continue to keep everyone involved in our thoughts as the healing process continues.

The members of the Skowhegan Fire Department would like to extend our deepest sympathies and prayers to everyone affected by the tragic explosion at the mill in Searsmont. Our thoughts are with the workers, their families, the surrounding community, and all of the first responders operating and impacted during this difficult time.

Incidents like these are a sobering reminder of the dangers many face each day, and of the strength and resilience shown by communities coming together in times of tragedy.

Please continue to keep all those impacted in your thoughts as crews continue their work and the community begins the road to recovery.

Yesterday, members of the Skowhegan Fire Department were honored to stand watch on the Western Avenue overpass in Fairfield alongside the Fairfield Fire Department during the procession for Warden Tibbetts, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty while flying for the Maine Warden Service on May 12.

Departments and agencies from across the state came together to pay their respects — standing side by side in support of one another and in honor of a life dedicated to service. Moments like these are a solemn reminder of the bond shared throughout the first responder community, regardless of the badge or uniform worn.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with Warden Tibbetts’ family, friends, and the entire Maine Warden Service during this difficult time.

Rest easy, Warden Tibbetts.

Fire safety starts with education, and last week our members spent time assisting with hands-on fire extinguisher training for the community. From learning the basics of extinguisher operation to practicing proper techniques, trainings like these help give people the confidence to act quickly and safely during an emergency.

Our firefighters are always proud to share their knowledge and experience to help keep the community prepared. While much of this work happens during on-duty hours, our members are always willing to step up when it comes to public safety and education

On Monday, members of SFD worked together to move hose, mount equipment, and get the new Engine 12 ready for service. This was a large undertaking that had members working hard throughout most of the day.

It was a great example of the teamwork and pride that exists within this department, with members coming together to make sure the new engine is ready to serve the community. As a result of everyone's hard work Engine 12 officially ran its first call Tuesday afternoon.

We are incredibly fortunate to have the continued support of our community in providing us with a tremendous piece of equipment that will serve Skowhegan Fire for many years to come.

Great work by everyone involved.
