Yesterday, members of the Skowhegan Fire Department were honored to stand watch on the Western Avenue overpass in Fairfield alongside the Fairfield Fire Department during the procession for Warden Tibbetts, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty while flying for the Maine Warden Service on May 12.

Departments and agencies from across the state came together to pay their respects — standing side by side in support of one another and in honor of a life dedicated to service. Moments like these are a solemn reminder of the bond shared throughout the first responder community, regardless of the badge or uniform worn.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with Warden Tibbetts’ family, friends, and the entire Maine Warden Service during this difficult time.

Rest easy, Warden Tibbetts.

Fire safety starts with education, and last week our members spent time assisting with hands-on fire extinguisher training for the community. From learning the basics of extinguisher operation to practicing proper techniques, trainings like these help give people the confidence to act quickly and safely during an emergency.

Our firefighters are always proud to share their knowledge and experience to help keep the community prepared. While much of this work happens during on-duty hours, our members are always willing to step up when it comes to public safety and education

On Monday, members of SFD worked together to move hose, mount equipment, and get the new Engine 12 ready for service. This was a large undertaking that had members working hard throughout most of the day.

It was a great example of the teamwork and pride that exists within this department, with members coming together to make sure the new engine is ready to serve the community. As a result of everyone's hard work Engine 12 officially ran its first call Tuesday afternoon.

We are incredibly fortunate to have the continued support of our community in providing us with a tremendous piece of equipment that will serve Skowhegan Fire for many years to come.

Great work by everyone involved.

Today, members of the Skowhegan Fire Department—both on and off duty—volunteered their time to assist the town sexton and DAR in restoring gravestones that were vandalized last week.

Crews worked diligently to reset and secure the damaged stones, ensuring they were properly placed ahead of Memorial Day weekend, now less than a month away. After noticing the damage earlier, members took the initiative to reach out and offer their assistance wherever it was needed. Crews repositioned nearly 30 stones, in just a couple hours.

This is what community involvement is all about—stepping up and lending a helping hand when it matters most.

Great work by all involved, and as always, stay safe.

Members of the Skowhegan Fire Department recently spent time training on low-angle rescue techniques, continuing their commitment to preparedness and public safety.

Low-angle rescue operations are used in situations such as embankments, wooded terrain, and other challenging environments where victims cannot be safely reached without the use of ropes and specialized equipment. These scenarios often involve slopes where footing is unstable and extra support is needed to safely access and remove a patient

During this training, crews focused on rope systems, anchor points, and patient packaging, ensuring members are proficient in safely lowering rescuers to a victim and efficiently bringing them back to safety. These hands-on evolutions allow firefighters to sharpen both new and existing skills in a controlled environment.

While these incidents may not happen every day, they require a high level of skill and coordination when they do. Regular training like this ensures that the Skowhegan Fire Department remains ready to respond when the community needs them most.

Members of the Skowhegan Fire Department B shift, along with their families and our partners at Redington Fairview EMS, spent Easter afternoon preparing a meal for everyone to enjoy.

Crews were able to sit down and share dinner together—uninterrupted—which is something that doesn’t happen often in this line of work. Moments like these strengthen the bond between agencies and help ensure seamless teamwork when it matters most.

Happy Easter to all, and as always—stay safe.

Members of the Skowhegan Fire Department spent the evening training on ice water rescue and cold weather emergencies.

While these incidents are low frequency, they carry a high risk for both civilians and firefighters. Crews partnered with the Anson Fire Department and RFGH EMS to sharpen their skills using specialized rescue equipment and practiced providing EMS care to patients suffering from cold weather-related emergencies.

As winter comes to a close, ice conditions are rapidly deteriorating and becoming increasingly dangerous.

Remember: No ice is ever 100% safe this time of year.

Stay safe!
