Last month, students from the Marti Stevens Learning Center joined community tree steward Halle in putting up kiosks at Cleaver Landing and McLean Woods! Students prepared the materials, dug the holes for the posts, and assembled both kiosks on site! These kiosks were possible through a collaboration with the Move More Kids program, which encourages kids to engage in physical activities such as hiking and sports!

As a follow-up to our appreciation post for volunteer Eric F. and his dedication to cleaning up the parking areas and trails at Whitten Woods in New Portland, we wanted to make share this cool wildlife footage he caught!

Stewardship efforts often happen without much in-the-moment gratitude, but our growing community continues to take care, driven by their love of land and recreation.

Recently, volunteer Eric F. cleaned up parking areas and trails off Middle Road at Whitten Woods in New Portland. He is not the only unseen volunteer to keep these trails in good condition – local neighbors contribute annually to this effort as well. He peeped some great wildlife while supporting the trails!

Thanks for keeping Whitten Woods inviting and enjoyable for use!

Do you know about lady’s slippers? They are Maine's most common native orchid and depend on specialized soil fungi to grow. We had the opportunity to see these little beauties, in addition to several other woodland flowers, on a recent Wildflower Walk at Larone Woods in Fairfield! Though beautiful, lady’s slippers should not be picked or transplanted. If you pick the flower, the plant cannot produce seeds for the next generation, and transplanted lady’s slippers rarely survive.

Who doesn't love having fun in the woods with their friends? That's exactly what our cleanup day was a few weeks ago at Weston Woods & Waters in Madison. Light-hearted laughs, lopping, and a hunting stand dismantled! (Check out our website for information about hunting on Somerset Woods properties, link below)The trails accessed from the Route 43 trailhead are better for it!

There is still work that needs to be done. If you are interested in helping, comment below!

Last week Forestland Steward Emma and AmeriCorps member Halle got to meet with Mrs. Whittemore’s second grade class at Canaan Elementary for some plant ID and flower pressing before summer break!

Students got to learn about spring ephemerals that are flowering right now, how to ID different ferns, and about some of Maine's native trees (a fan favorite being that yellow birch branches smell like root beer). Each student also got to bring home a plant press to make their own collection of plant pressings over the summer!

Thank you Mrs. Whittemore for inviting us to speak with your students, and thank you to Mrs. Whittemore’s students for your beautiful thank you cards!

The ball is rolling at Benner Woods on East Madison Road in East Madison! It may not seem like a ton was accomplished on our first workday, but big projects start with good planning, boots on the ground, and brains working together.

We assessed the existing shed, made a plan for several piles of old lumber, and hauled our first load of lead-painted windows to the Norridgewock dump.
