TONIGHT: Tell Maine DOT its Time For Transportation Choices

Maine DOT is holding a public input session today, May 19th, at the Westbrook Community Center from 5:30pm-8pm, and on Thursday online at 6:30-7:30pm.

Tell them we need options for how to get around: trails, public transportation, and bike lanes. If we subsidize only car transportation, congestion will grow.

Hi all, we’re writing to let you know that there are TWO VERY IMPORTANT things happening this week. Remember the Gorham Connector - the proposed highway through Smiling Hill Farm?

Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) is undertaking a comprehensive and collaborative planning effort to evaluate and improve the area’s transportation system.

This is YOUR CHANCE to let them know that this a huge opportunity for us all to take the first step AWAY from car dependency and TOWARD more accessible and affordable mobility.

Please try to attend and meet the Portland West team. The in-person event will be the best way to meet people and have your voice heard. Our recommendations:

Prioritize multi-modal transportation - not just cars.

Build a FULLY PROTECTED bike lane network that connects Portland to Gorham.

Build a fully protected bike lane network on the RT 25 corridor.

The City of Westbrook is the key to success here. If we want to achieve mode-shift (getting people out of their cars) and have a high adoption rate, we must provide safe options.

There are two options through downtown Westbrook: Main St & William Clark Drive. We MUST have a bike land on one. If people feel safe, they’ll change their behavior. If not, they won’t.

Pause any plans to build the Gorham Connector until the new Bus Rapid Transit Plan is implemented and has been in effect for at least 12-18 months.

Prioritize moving people, not people’s cars.

Public engagement opportunities:

TONIGHT (May 19) @ 5:30-8:30

What does transportation around other Amazon warehouses look like? We’ll explain what we found on Thursday night at this event!

Do you have thoughts, concerns, or questions about the Amazon facility proposed for Main Street in Gorham?

Mark your calendars! Next week, Gorham residents are organizing a public meeting to discuss the proposed Amazon warehouse.

Public Meeting: Proposed Amazon Warehouse in Gorham
Thursday, February 26th, 7:00 PM
First Parish Congregational Church
2 Church St., Gorham, Maine

RSVP is optional, but helpful! Residents from other towns are also welcome, as the project would likely impact all of Greater Portland and southern Maine.

At this meeting, we’ll hear from local experts and community voices on key topics, including traffic and infrastructure impacts, tax revenue, alternative development strategies, and working conditions for Amazon employees. Community members will have time to ask questions, share concerns, and make their voices heard in a public forum.

We look forward to seeing you next week!

THIS IS IT! WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Our bill to cancel the Gorham Connector will have its public hearing at the State House in Augusta on Thursday, April 3, 2025. Your testimony makes a huge difference! It helps the legislators see where the public is on the issue, and helps them have the courage to defy the wishes of the MTA.

Click the link and you'll find a form with instructions on how to testify on this bill. Having people in the room is great, though it involves driving to Augusta and spending a couple hours, maybe a whole afternoon there.

If you like, you can fill out your information in this form and I will be in touch with you to coordinate, provide tips, directions, and potentially carpools. You do not have to fill out this form in order to testify! Just scroll to the instructions and click on the links.

Note: If you do speak, you only get 3 minutes, and it's best if you have 20 copies of your testimony printed to hand to the members. Written testimony can be submitted anytime in the next 2 weeks, and can be any length.

Thank you for your interest in testifying in support of LD 1020, An Act To Repeal The Laws Providing For The Construction Of A Connector To Gorham And To Resell Land Taken Under Those Laws To Previous Property Owners. The bill has been scheduled for a public hearing on April 3rd at 1pm with the Tran...

Folks, this is it. This bill, just published in the Maine State Legislature, would repeal the Gorham Connector and sell the land back to the previous owners at the price they were paid by the MTA.

Contact your state legislators to support LD 1020. More info on how to do that can be found here: https://mailchi.mp/004dae64308d/support-our-bill-to-repeal-the-gorham-connector-ld-1020

Let's do this!

Soon, the Maine Legislature will consider a bill that would end the Gorham “Connector” fiasco. It would repeal the laws that authorized the MTA to decide if it should expand from the Maine Mall to Gorham. It would sell the land the MTA acquired for the project back to the previous landowners at ...
