Spotted lanternflies may be hard to spot, but their egg masses can be hiding in plain sight.

Keep an eye out for patches that look like gray putty or dried, cracked mud. Egg masses can be laid on all kinds of smooth surfaces, including vehicles, trailers, outdoor furniture, grills, and other equipment.

Taking a quick look before moving these items can help prevent this invasive pest from hitching a ride to a new area.

See something suspicious? Take a photo before disturbing it and report it.

Have you heard of Ag Allies?

Ag Allies is an independent program of Somerset County Soil & Water Conservation District focused on bringing agriculture and grassland bird conservation together.

The program works directly with farmers, landowners, and land managers to protect nesting grassland birds while keeping agricultural land productive and working.

Through technical assistance, field surveys, delayed mowing strategies, and financial support for participating farmers, Ag Allies helps find practical solutions that work for both farms and birds.

It's a unique piece of the work happening through our District, and one we're pretty proud to have under the Somerset SWCD umbrella.

Working farms. Grassland birds. Finding ways to make room for both.

Heading out for one last camping trip this season? Leave the firewood at home.

Firewood can carry invasive insects and diseases into new areas, sometimes before there are any obvious signs they're there.

Buy firewood close to where you'll burn it instead. It helps protect Maine's forests and saves you some room in the truck.

Need to find firewood near your campsite? Check out Firewood Scout.

One of our favorite parts of Conservation District work is getting people together to learn from people who really know their stuff.

Throughout the year, Somerset County SWCD offers workshops, walks, demonstrations, and other learning opportunities covering everything from farming and forestry to wildlife and invasive species.

Some are more technical. Others are simply a chance to walk outside with an expert, see what's happening on the ground, and ask questions.

You don't have to be a farmer, forester, or conservation professional to join us. Our programs are open to anyone interested in learning more about the land around them.

Keep an eye on our events page. We're always working on what's next.

Maine’s forests do more than shape our landscape. They support an estimated 33,000 jobs across the state.

One simple way to support Maine’s forest industry while also protecting our forests is to buy local firewood. Moving firewood long distances can also move invasive forest pests into new areas.

Buy it where you burn it. Support Maine’s forest economy and help keep invasive pests from hitching a ride.

A big congratulations to our neighbors at Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District!

They have been named the 2026 Maine Outstanding Tree Farmers of the Year, recognizing their stewardship of Williamsburg Forest in Williamsburg, Maine.

They'll be honored this Saturday, September 12, at the 71st Annual Forestry Field Day, hosted by the Maine Tree Farm Program and Maine Woodland Owners.

Williamsburg Forest isn't just a working forest. Piscataquis County SWCD uses the property for education, workshops, and tours, while also keeping it open for recreation and wildlife. It's a great example of the kind of hands-on conservation work happening through Soil and Water Conservation Districts across Maine.

Forestry Field Day will include guided tours, forestry demonstrations, walk-and-talk sessions with experts, exhibits, and local food.

Congratulations to the Piscataquis County SWCD team!

Beech Leaf Disease has been in Maine since 2021 and is now well established in the state. Dark banding between leaf veins, curled or deformed leaves, and early leaf drop are all signs that a tree may be affected.

A lot of conservation work starts with, "I have no idea who I'm supposed to call about this."

And that's okay.

One of the most useful things a Conservation District can do is connect people. We work alongside foresters, soil specialists, wildlife biologists, agricultural professionals, NRCS, Extension, state agencies, nonprofits, and other local partners.

If you have a question about your farm, forest, soil, water, or property and don't know where to start, start local. We can help point you in the right direction.
