Learn About Accessory Dwelling Units and Share Your Input!
The Village of Skokie is considering changes to the Village Code that would allow some homeowners to build an accessory dwelling unit, or ADU, on their property.
*Why Is Skokie Looking at ADUs?*
ADUs add more housing options. They can help older adults live near family, give young adults an affordable place to start out or let homeowners earn rental income.

*What Is an ADU?*
An ADU is a small, separate home located on the same lot as a house. Common examples include:
* A cottage in the backyard
* An apartment above a detached garage
* An addition built on to an existing home
* Each ADU has its own kitchen, bathroom, and living space, so a person can live there independently.
Some community members may have concerns about parking, privacy or how ADUs could change the look of a neighborhood. The proposed rules are designed to address questions like these. They would set standards for where an ADU could be built, how large it could be and what parking and safety requirements it would need to meet. The Village wants to know whether these rules strike the right balance and what, if anything, should be added or changed. The proposed regulations address ADU size and height, parking, rental registration, design and safety standards, and other requirements.
In January 2025, the Housing Sub-Committee of the Plan Commission began discussing and developing proposed regulations for ADUs. The proposed ADU regulations are now being considered by the Village Board and, before making any final decisions, the Board requested more input from the community.
Feedback from the sessions and an upcoming community survey will be shared with the Village Board at its November 16th meeting as it considers the proposed Zoning Code changes.
