Today, AFSCME Council 65 is thankful for the 8-hour workday and all of the other worker rights and protections that workers have fought for.
In May of 1886, a movement was born that would change the world of labor forever. A bold proclamation was made in Chicago that "eight hours shall constitute a legal day's labor" and it ignited a national firestorm.
On May 1st, over 300,000 workers across the US walked off their jobs in a massive, unified strike. It was the first May Day in history. In Chicago, tens of thousands took to the streets showing unprecedented strength and solidarity opposing a system that had long ignored them. May Day stands as a powerful reminder of the courage it took to secure weekends and work-life balance we often take for granted.
