I feel the need to correct much misinformation about the State of South Dakota's recent initiative that they have launched and named Operation: Prairie Thunder.
There are two elements to this initiative. One is an increased partnership with South Dakota Highway Patrol that will dedicate 10-15 troopers for a saturation patrol at least twice a month to hold parole absconders accountable, enforce speeding and exhibition driving, and interdict drugs in the Sioux Falls Metro Area. This is a major complaint from our residents and we look forward to cracking down on it. As we typically do, our Sioux Falls Police Department along with our partners at the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office and Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, will work closely with the Highway Patrol for these saturation patrols. We are grateful for this partnership and support from the State as our community continues to grow, and we work to hold those accountable who are choosing illegal activity.
The second initiative the Governor announced involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and deportation assistance is a state-led initiative. All questions or concerns related to this portion the State's announcement should be directed to the Governor’s Office as they are leading and executing anything related to this. Neither my office nor The City of Sioux Falls had or has anything to do with this part of the effort. In addition, our home rule status does not allow us to be in conflict with State Law, including SDCL 23-3-74.
Our Sioux Falls Police Department will remain consistent with the practices they have had for years, which is focusing on crime within our community, and have no plans to depart from what we have done in the past to ensure we remain a safe city.
While I appreciate the passion of our community on this issue, the misinformation train has run rampant so thank you for allowing me to provide the facts on this matter.
