Today was a very special day for Ines and me in Pujilí, Ecuador.
We were honored to accept an invitation from Mayor Raúl Arroyo, members of the municipal government, and local officials to attend the Corpus Christi celebrations as they visited the Inés Cobo Donoso Educational Unit, keeping alive one of the most important cultural traditions of this beautiful community.
Corpus Christi in Pujilí is more than a celebration. It is a living expression of faith, history, culture, and identity. One of its most recognized traditions is the Danzante de Pujilí — ceremonial dancers whose colorful attire and magnificent headdresses symbolize heritage, gratitude, harvest, and the enduring spirit of the people of Cotopaxi.
What made today especially meaningful was that we were invited to join the dance itself. I was deeply humbled to be given the ceremonial headdress of the Danzante and welcomed into the celebration. It was a moment of respect, friendship, and cultural sharing that I will never forget.
For Ines, returning home to Ecuador and witnessing these traditions continue to thrive is very personal. For me, it was another reminder of why we do what we do.
Over the last weeks we have been preparing for our July 2026 medical mission to Pujilí through IMAHELPS ECUADOR. Soon we will return with our team of doctors, surgeons, dentists, nurses, pain management specialists, pharmacists, and volunteers from across the United States, Brazil, the Netherlands, and our partners in Ecuador.
Tomorrow we begin our journey home, carrying with us gratitude, memories, and excitement to return.
Thank you, Pujilí, for your friendship, your traditions, and for welcoming us into your community.
We look forward to coming back in July to serve alongside you!
