Grief Support After the Death of a Child

"The Compassionate Friends is about transforming the pain of grief into the elixir of hope. It takes people out of the isolation society imposes on the bereaved and lets them express their grief naturally. And the newly bereaved get to see people who have survived and are learning to live and love again."

The words of TCF's Founder, Simon Stephens resonate with those who have come to The Compassionate Friends hoping to find a purpose in a life that suddenly seems so empty. Whether your family has had a child die (at any age from any cause) or you are trying to help those who have gone through this life altering experience, The Compassionate Friends exists to provide friendship, understanding, and hope to those going through the natural grieving process. Through a network of more than 650 chapters with locations in all 50 states, as well as Washington DC, Puerto Rico, and Guam, The Compassionate Friends has been supporting bereaved families after the death of a child for four decades. The National Office and its staff also provide many levels of support to our chapters, as well as individual responses to those who call on the phone, contact us through our website, or send an e-mail that simply says, "My child has died. Help me!" We will be here as long as you need us. That is our commitment to you.

Some days don’t show up on every calendar…
but they are written on our hearts all the same.

Today is International Bereaved Mother’s Day.
A day for the women who carry both love and loss in the same breath.

If this day belongs to you, I want you to know…
I see you.

I see the quiet strength it takes to keep going.
The way you hold their memory in the middle of ordinary moments.
The love that didn’t end… even when everything else changed.

You are still a mother.
Always have been. Always will be.

There is no timeline for this kind of love.
No finish line for this kind of grief.
Only a sacred, ongoing story…
where their life continues to matter,
and your love continues to speak.

Today, we honor you.
We speak their names.
We remember alongside you.

And if your heart feels especially tender…
be gentle with yourself.

Love like yours never dies.
It just learns how to live in a different way. 💜

Dear TCF members,

I am writing to share some difficult news about one of our members. One of our dads, Josh Cauwels, passed away on Tuesday, April 21, 2026. His son Ernest (Ernie) passed away on June 9, 2019. There is a memorial gathering planned for Friday, May 1st @ 10:30 a.m. Please consider attending to honor Josh’s life and support his family, including his two daughters, Lucille & Ophelia.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help with funeral expenses https://gofund.me/c68f292cc

Josh was employed at the St. Francis House at the time of his death. At our May meeting, we will be collecting monetary donations and purchasing a memorial gift (something that would be of use to them) in honor of Josh.

If you feel so inclined to support in one or both ways, I know it would be very much appreciated by his family and the St. Francis House.

With deep compassion,
The TCF Leadership Team

It’s Easter, and for millions in the world this is a day of hope. For the thousands upon thousands of bereaved parents who believe in heaven, today is their biggest hope of seeing their child again. May this hope give us the strength needed to get through each and every day of grief.

An article from our April Newsletter...

EASTER AND PASSOVER

The Easter and Passover seasons are upon us. They are special family times that make it more obvious that one is missing. Some parents are struggling with what they believe. The pretty dresses and hats don’t seem to matter as much as they did. There are more important things on our minds now. We are facing the renewal of life all around us – and yet the missing child’s life is not renewable. We hurt because life is going on and his or hers is not. These are normal reactions for some when grief is fresh, for the changing of seasons is a poignant time for many.

Those of us who have had the necessary time wish to convey to those who have not that it won’t always be this painful. When your grief softens (and it will), so will many of the hurtful responses. If you can, get out in the sunshine, go for a walk, smell the fragrance of the flowers and allow the warmth and beauty of the season to permeate your being. It just may make your day a little lighter.
