Together, we create a warm and welcoming community enriching the lives of those we support. At DakotAbilities we work to make that vision come true.

We see an extraordinary vision – a vision of community that actively includes people of all abilities. We join with the others to make our community one in which all people are valued for their talents and individual contributions. We not only introduce people we serve to numerous opportunities, we also educate the community to what it means to be inclusive. Our goals include:

Keeping people safe

and ensuring their best possible health
Supporting a person-directed quality of life – self-determination, choice and self-advocacy
Facilitating relationships between people and their community. We recognize that quality of life is not a “thing”, but an on-going process that requires focused efforts over time. DakotAbilities provides services to 140 individuals with developmental disabilities ages 16 to 80 through a variety of service options. These services are available 24-hours a day, 365 days a year. DakotAbilities coordinates programs and services including residential, vocational, medical/therapeutic, recreation, transportation, educational, and case management. Each program is organized through an interdisciplinary process which coordinates evaluation, planning and implementation of developmental training and care according to the specific needs of the individual.

A fan favorite! 🐍 The Great Plains Zoo Zoomobile came for a visit in celebration of National Zoo Awareness Day!

At DakotAbilities, we believe the things you love should have a place in your day. Whether it’s animals, music, art, sports, or something completely unique to you, your interests help make you who you are—and we love finding ways to bring those favorites to life.

These mornings are always a highlight, and seeing the excitement and curiosity on people's faces is what makes them so special.

His incredible progress is a reminder that accomplishments come in all forms—and that celebrating those moments means recognizing hard work, progress, determination, and the joy of achieving something meaningful.

We love reading stories of the good work our fundholders and nonprofits are doing. Lauren Christensen, a fundholder who died in 2025, created Trent River Camp on his family’s property more than 20 years ago. Throughout his philanthropy, Christensen supported people who have disabilities. DakotAbilities

Today, his camp is enjoyed by several organizations. Recently, LifeScape talked about how important the space has been and how it continues to benefit families who want to enjoy the outdoors.

“Lauren was a man with a huge heart, a strategic plan, a knack for gathering people together for the good of others,” said Rebecca Sluiter, LifeScape’s volunteer services manager. “He was a storyteller and a jokester. He understood his gifts and wanted to share them with others.”

Volunteer Travis Jensen said the legacy Christensen created carries on “in people’s willingness to help out, engage in conversation and make sure everyone at camp enjoys the day.”

What a day! Thank you to everyone who joined us at Crooked Pint for our Dine to Donate fundraiser and helped make the day such a success. From breakfast through dinner, we were so grateful to see our community come together to eat well and do good!

A special thank-you goes to the incredible servers, kitchen team, and staff at Crooked Pint Sioux Falls. Your hospitality, energy, and hard work helped the entire day run seamlessly, and we are so thankful for the care you put into making this fundraiser a success.

And, of course, thank you to everyone who dined, carried out, shared, and supported the event and DakotAbilities. Every bit of support makes a difference, and we’re so grateful to have a community that continues to show up for the people we support.

A little sunshine, some serious lawn care, and plenty of laughs made for a great morning with the Loffler Companies Helping Hands team! 🌿☀️

This incredible group spent the morning at Longfellow Center sprucing up our gardens and patio with some intensive lawn care—helping make our outdoor spaces even more welcoming for the people we support.

After working up a sweat outside, they headed indoors to cool off and spend some time with us through fun group games and plenty of good conversation.

Thank you, Loffler, for sharing your time, talents, and energy with our DakotAbilities community! We’re grateful for volunteers who don’t just lend a helping hand but take the time to build relationships and spend time alongside the people we support.

With fair season in full swing, it should come as no surprise that a little of that festive spirit has made its way to Longfellow Center! 🎡🎪

This is just one fun take on the traditional ring toss game you might find at any fair—made by one of our very own talented Direct Support Professionals! How cool is that?!

Everyone who tried their luck at the game was met with plenty of cheers, encouragement, and, of course, contagious laughter when those rings found their way into the most ridiculous spots.

A little friendly competition, a lot of laughter, and plenty of fair-inspired fun!

We were so happy to welcome another incredible group of volunteers from First PREMIER Bank and PREMIER Bankcard for Coffee & Conversation in the Longfellow gym this morning!

Recurring volunteer visits like these are about so much more than lending a hand — they’re about building relationships, sharing laughter, enjoying meaningful conversations and getting to know one another along the way.
