Water is an essential of life, but it can also wreak havoc. Historic buildings like the Grinde School, built northeast of Colton in 1887 and moved to the Sioux Empire fairgrounds in 1968, had shingles and paint to protect them from the weather, but no gutters or downspouts to keep rain and melting snow from sliding down the siding and gathering on frames and sills of windows where water can take off paint and cause rot. They had gutters in those days, troughs made of wood, and the caretakers of Pioneer Lane, where the Grinde School resides, would like to retrofit it with such gutters. But the cost is high. Give to the Keep Your Powder Dry fund drive to help preserve Grinde School and other historic buildings on Pioneer Lane. Email contributions to [email protected]

The placement of the Powder House Marker has been approved. It will be installed some time this spring on a spot adjacent to the walkway near the Dawley Farm movie theatre. The movement to restore the name of Powder House Road, however, needs your support.

Newly stained Good Sam Church vestibule floor, one of many restoration, preservation, and improvement projects this year on Pioneer Lane. Come on out and take a look. We have some great entertainment scheduled, as well, and some educational displays such as a blacksmithing demonstration. Look for news about another special feature to be added to the Rutland Depot, as well. Many thanks to Directors Bill and Jeanne Pattison for some great work at restoration, including doors for the Fersdahl Cabin much closer to what the original doors no doubt were like. And the improved stage on the Nyberg Bandstand, courtesy Dennis Harris, will get a workout with Sioux Empire's Got Old Time Talent, Mon. Aug 3, Wed. Aug 5, Friday Aug. 7, with Finals Saturday Aug. 8, all starting times 4 p.m. Come on out, be entertained, learn something new about something old, and have Fun on the North Forty!
