It's not that we'd say we're competitive at the Community Foundation, but let's just say there are a lot of traveling trophies around the office, for everything from winning at Jenga to a Chili Cook-Off.

In that spirit, we celebrated summer with a little bean-bag toss. There were brackets. There was speculation on the integrity of different boards (the homemade one maybe isn't regulation).

Congrats to Mike Finnegan for winning it all (his prize is this social media post and a year of bragging).

From all of us at the Community Foundation, we hope you've had a great summer. Thanks for always trusting us with your philanthropy. Being part of joyful giving in Sioux Falls makes every day at the office a good one.

We love reading stories of the good work our fundholders and nonprofits are doing. Lauren Christensen, a fundholder who died in 2025, created Trent River Camp on his family’s property more than 20 years ago. Throughout his philanthropy, Christensen supported people who have disabilities. DakotAbilities

Today, his camp is enjoyed by several organizations. Recently, LifeScape talked about how important the space has been and how it continues to benefit families who want to enjoy the outdoors.

“Lauren was a man with a huge heart, a strategic plan, a knack for gathering people together for the good of others,” said Rebecca Sluiter, LifeScape’s volunteer services manager. “He was a storyteller and a jokester. He understood his gifts and wanted to share them with others.”

Volunteer Travis Jensen said the legacy Christensen created carries on “in people’s willingness to help out, engage in conversation and make sure everyone at camp enjoys the day.”

Earlier this year, students participated in the art therapy program at Joe Foss, an alternative school which supports students at risk of not graduating. They created paintings and drawings. They wrote poems. They shared their pasts and their hopes for the future.

In a community art show in the spring, they asked others to experience life through their eyes, and through their art.

"I hope people can relate and connect in their own way," said Marley, who painted her version of light and dark to help make sense of seasonal depression.

Greg and Karen Schultz say giving back in Sioux Falls creates a joyful feeling. They give to places that mean something to them - such as Augustana University, where they met nearly 55 years ago - and causes that have been important throughout their life, including music and recreation.

"When you see wonderful things in life, you try to be a positive person and a positive influence on your society and your culture," Greg said. "You want to leave a legacy of positive things. It's important to give back to the place you call home."

If you want to see hope in action, consider attending an event with Special Olympics South Dakota.

Libby Pfeifer, 33, loves the events.

“She loves it. She’s so happy,” her mom, Starla, said. “It’s an opportunity for folks with special needs to grow. And it does mean a lot to them. They’re competitive and they like to be with their peers.”

More than 2,000 athletes across South Dakota compete. We caught up with CEO Nick Moen this summer to learn more about how this program fosters community throughout South Dakota.
