People want their voices heard and their stories told.

They want their communities represented, their dreams shared and their burdens lifted.

It’s a universal desire for connection, and it’s one that South Dakota Public Broadcasting takes seriously.

“Not everyone watches PBS or listens to NPR,” said Julie Overgaard, executive director. “But everybody needs basic services for public safety or open government or local news or to hear stories about us, about South Dakotans. We don’t serve everybody in the same way.”

If you're heading to the McKennan Park wading pool - which opens today along with other City of Sioux Falls pools - you'll notice big improvements. The pool and concession area were redone - making this toddler and family favorite an even better experience.

A donation by Pierce and Barbara McDowell through the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation allowed for additional upgrades and finishes to the $4.4 million project.

“Our family has lived in this neighborhood for more than 35 years, and we know how important this park is to the community,” Pierce McDowell III said. “We are grateful to play a small part in preserving the park for future generations."

"So many local nonprofits are doing excellent work, and we're excited to help fund them," said Patrick Gale, of the Community Foundation. "Our donors trust us and our grants committee to support vital services that serve our community."

In fiscal year 2026, the Community Foundation has awarded more than $750,000 through the Community Fund Endowment and other unrestricted funds as part of our competitive grantmaking program.

Jeff and Linda Baka have been inspired to give to women's health programs, such as All Women Count, because of their own experiences and careers.

“What mostly influenced our giving is living and raising children here and seeing where the need was and being inspired by the work organizations were doing,” Linda said.

Tim and Nancee Sturdevant believe the Neighborhood Soccer program makes a difference. That's why they gave through the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation to provide more opportunities for kids and families.

“Whether it’s the soccer game or a meal shared among neighbors, Neighborhood Soccer creates a more connected community, and that helps our kids thrive," Nancee Sturdevant said. "Tim and I are pleased to be a part of it.”

The program continues to expand - with support from churches, schools and an extended list of local sponsors. Another great example of how philanthropy can build a better tomorrow in Sioux Falls.

It's Bike to Work Day.

Which means, of course, it's also a great day to celebrate one of the most recent additions to the Sioux Falls recreation trail. Thanks to Jeff and Tammie Broin and the Ashby family, the trail was expanded from Lien Park to Bahnson Avenue.

Think gorgeous river views, elevated boardwalks and a path that meanders through the trees.

The next time you're looking for somewhere to ride, run, walk or just immerse yourself in nature for a bit, consider this stretch - a perfect example of how generosity builds a better Sioux Falls.

Community leaders came together to celebrate Andy Patterson's 20-year anniversary at the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation.

There was no shortage of praise for his kindheartedness, vision and true desire to bring people together in the spirit of philanthropy and community solutions.

Suzanne Veenis, board chair of the Community Foundation, credits Patterson's exceptional relationships with donors and nonprofits for the continued success of the organization. "His team has grown, the assets have grown and the giving has grown," Veenis said.

Paul Everson grew up in rural South Dakota, and his family experiences have shaped his philanthropy. That includes giving to causes for children and to organizations that improve the quality of life for people with illnesses.

"I've always been family oriented. If I could help someone, I would do it in a heartbeat. That's just the way I was raised," Paul said.
