We’re not playing on our phones, we’re taking care of business…this is what 7000+ acres conserved looks like across South Dakota and Nebraska. If we don’t watch closely, our grasslands are disappearing right in front of our eyes. We are on a mission to make sure that doesn’t happen.

We’ve spent 20+ years working with communities that call the Great Plains home, but we are new to social media, so share this with someone who loves the Northern Prairies and wants to see it protected. That’s what we’re here for.

Can you guess any of these species? So many people look at the prairie and see empty space…but we know that it’s full of plants, animals, and insects that call this landscape home, just like you! Our work not only maintains the land for the next generation of prairie lovers, it also preserves it for the species that depend on it, too.

Top 5 Horror Movies - Grasslands conservation edition.

We’ve been at this since 1999, and while our love for our backyard continues to grow, so do the challenges in protecting it for the next generation of South Dakotans and Nebraskans. You being here helps us continue on our mission to preserve our beautiful home. We are so thankful for the ranchers, community members, and grassland lovers like you!

The birds know what’s up.

Turns out, when you protect the grassland, you protect everything that lives in it. Which is great news if you’re looking to get into birding.

The Northern Great Plains is home to some of the most significant grassland bird habitat left in North America. Species like the bobolink, dickcissel, meadowlark, and grasshopper sparrow depend almost entirely on native prairie. This habitat has lost over 70% of its original range to development and agriculture.

When a landowner chooses to protect their land through a conservation easement, they’re not just protecting soil, water, or open space. They’re protecting the specific ecosystem that benefits us all, including the birds.

Follow along if you’d like to see more of the land — and its residents — that we’re working to protect. 🌾

The monarch butterfly has lost over 80% of its population in the last two decades. Habitat loss, specifically, the conversion of native grasslands and wildflower meadows into developed or agricultural land, is one of the biggest reasons why.

But here’s what most people don’t know: when private landowners choose to protect their land through a conservation easement, they’re not just saving a piece of ground. They’re preserving the corridors, the native plants, and the open spaces that species like the monarch depend on to survive.

That’s what Northern Prairies Land Trust does. When we take care of the land for generations to come, we protect it for the species that depend on it, too.
You can help advocate for the stewardship of these vital ecosystems and beautiful places.

Follow along, share this with someone who loves this land, and if you’re a landowner wondering what conservation could look like for your property, we’d love to talk! Our DMs and comments are always open.

The Great Plains - the grasslands of South Dakota, Nebraska, and the surrounding region - are considered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature to be the most altered and endangered ecosystem on the planet.

Let that land for a second.

Only 55% of the grassland in the US and Canadian Great Plains remain intact. In 2022 alone, 1.9 million acres were converted to cropland. Grassland birds have suffered the steepest losses of all North American birds over the last 50 years, and the native wildlife, pollinators, and water systems that depend on these ecosystems are disappearing alongside them. And most people driving through it have no idea.

That’s the thing about the Great Plains, it doesn’t announce its own loss, it just quietly shrinks.

Northern Prairies Land Trust exists because someone has to be paying attention.

Together with conservation-minded land owners, we work to protect the prairie outside your window. We’d love for you to join us on that mission.

This is what you are protecting when you take care of the land. The Northern Prairies landscape is something that ties our community together. The water, the wildlife, the agriculture…they are all part of our culture.

One way we put stewardship in action is through the John H. Davidson Stewardship Fund. This stewardship fund helps us connect with conservation-minded private landowners to protect their land in perpetuity. If you are looking to build a legacy that will far outlive you, let’s chat. •

25 years ago, Northern Prairies Land Trust started with a simple idea: private landowners are the most powerful conservation partners we have. 🌾

A conservation easement isn’t complicated. You keep your land. You set aside certain rights - no subdivision, no development that harms what makes the land valuable. And those protections are permanent.

It starts with a conversation.

If you’re a landowner thinking about the future of your property, or if you just want to understand what conservation looks like in practice, we’d love to hear from you!

Conservation isn’t a moment - it’s a commitment that outlasts all of us. At Northern Prairies Land Trust, every easement we secure is a promise kept to the land itself, to the birds that nest there, to the water that flows through it, and to the families who will inherit it.

Prairies are one of the most threatened ecosystems in North America - and one of the least protected. We’ve been working since 1999 to change that, one landowner conversation at a time.

We’re grateful for every partner, supporter, and landowner who understands that some things are worth protecting for good.

Thank you for caring about what lasts.
