⚖️ Study the ordinances that govern public input.

📜 Draft, redraft, and bring a final copy of your speaking points.

🗺️ Know your city council district and consider sending your thoughts to your councilor prior to the meeting.

📍 State your name and address at the podium for the record.

⌛︎ Watch your time! General input in Sioux Falls is 3 minutes, draft / rehearse a 2 minute 50 second presentation.

❓ Address the councilor directly and remember they are NOT allowed to answer or respond.

Provide hand outs with your contact information for follow up, write, email or call your councilor for more information.

Public Service Announcement

When a group of us came back together to restart the Whittier Residents Association , in 2024 we did so because we believed our neighborhood deserved more opportunities for connection, collaboration, and a stronger sense of community.

We wanted to help create a space where neighbors could get to know one another, share concerns, exchange ideas, access resources, and feel empowered to make a difference in the place we call home.

Our goal has never to become the only voice of Whittier, and to help ensure that more voices could be heard.

That is why we want to emphasize something important: You do not need the Whittier Residents Association's permission to make a positive difference in our neighborhood.

If you see an opportunity to improve something, have an idea worth pursuing, or simply want to bring neighbors together around a shared interest, we encourage you to take that initiative and run with it.

Our association is not here to be a gatekeeper for community involvement.

We are here to help build connections, encourage participation, share resources, and support neighbors who want to contribute, positively.

However, not every neighborhood initiative needs to be organized, approved, or led by our association.

We also recognize that our capacity as free will volunteers is limited.

While we cannot personally lead every worthwhile idea, that does not diminish its value or prevent others from bringing it to life.

We believe a healthy neighborhood is one where leadership is shared, ideas are welcomed, and people feel empowered to act rather than wait for someone else to take the first step.

We are always happy to hear what neighbors are working on, help make connections where possible, and celebrate the good things happening throughout Whittier.

After all, we did not restart this association so that everything would have to go through us.

We restarted it because we believe that when neighbors feel connected, supported, and empowered, our entire community becomes stronger AND inspires others into meaningful action.

Whittier belongs to all of its neighbors and supporters, and so does the opportunity to make it better.

We welcome different perspectives, thoughtful questions, and constructive critique. Those are important parts of a healthy community.

What we will discourage is criticism that serves only to diminish the efforts of neighbors who are volunteering their time, resources, and energy to make Whittier a place to belong and not just live.

SFSD needs your feedback on a plan to replace Whittier MS, add another westside elementary, and make security improvements across the District.

A $105 M bond would be needed and a community vote would happen in May 2027.

SDDOT Seeks Public Input for 10th and 11th Street Viaducts Replacement Study in Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT), in conjunction with the City of Sioux Falls, South Eastern Council of Governments (SECOG)/Sioux Falls Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), will hold a public meeting open house to discuss the 10th and 11th Street Viaduct Replacement Major Investment Study and gather public input on three options for replacing the viaduct structures. The public meeting open house is scheduled from 5 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2026, at Holiday Inn City Centre, located at 100 E. 8th St., in Sioux Falls.

There will be a focus on gathering feedback on key considerations including bridge profile, connectivity to Reid Street, roadway alignment, and pedestrian connectivity, along with effects on nearby community resources. The public meeting will consist of a recorded presentation and interactive activities. The recorded presentation will be shown multiple times during the open house.

As part of the environmental review process, the study will also evaluate potential impacts to publicly owned park and recreation properties protected under Sections 4(f) and 6(f) of federal law. Community members are encouraged to review the information presented, including potential effects to these resources, and provide feedback that will help inform the study, environmental review process, and future project decisions. For those unable to attend the in-person public meeting, or desire additional details, information about the study may also be found on the study website at https://www.1011viaductstudy.com/.

Individuals needing assistance, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), should contact the SDDOT ADA Coordinator (605-773-3540) two business days prior to the meeting to ensure accommodations are available. For any in-person meeting, notice is further given to individuals with disabilities that the meeting is being held in a physically accessible location.

Whittier neighbors, we have an idea, and we would love your thoughts!

What if we brought together a group of neighborhood men who enjoy good conversation, a cup of coffee, an occasional cookout, and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in our community?

Inspired by a similar idea taking shape in the McKennan Park neighborhood Association, we are exploring whether something like this could find a home in Whittier.

The concept is simple: Build friendships, lend a hand, and stren inge neighborhood we share.

This would not be another formal organization or compete with the wonderful groups already serving our community.

Instead, it would be an informal gathering of neighbors who enjoy spending time together while supporting existing organizations, neighborhood projects, and people who could use an extra hand.

Some days might involve volunteering at a community event, helping with a neighborhood improvement project, or supporting a local cause.

Other days might simply be coffee, grilling, laughter, and getting to know one another.

No dues.
No complicated structure.
No big commitments.

Just good neighbors, meaningful friendships, and opportunities to do some good together.

Sioux Falls Police responded to a reported shooting near East 8th Street and North Conklin Avenue early Thursday morning.

According to public reporting, an argument inside an apartment preceded the shooting. Police subsequently arrested an 18-year-old suspect.

This incident is being shared for neighborhood awareness.

A No Kings rally is scheduled for this Saturday, October 17th, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, near the intersection of E. 10th Street and S. Cliff Avenue.

Those traveling through the area should anticipate possible traffic congestion, increased pedestrian activity, and delays.
