Project Donnie

Project Donnie Making miracles in Sioux Falls by helping people who are struggling. One Sunday morning I was watching CBS Sunday Morning with my son, Donnie.

One of the segments was on a man who started an organization to help people in his hometown. Donnie looked at me and said, 'We should do that.' I agreed. That is how Project Donnie got started.

We have a friend that works with some of the local reservations and the foster kids there. Some of the foster kids have no foster family and live in a group home. She just returned from dropping off needed supplies and brought back a list of additional needed items. If you can help let us know and we will arrange a pick up. Thanks all!!

After coming back from his Washington DC trip, Donnie has decided he wants to do more! In addition to continuing and expanding Donnie's Closet, this summer he is joining with EmBe in Sioux Falls for the first Camp ChangeMaker. At this 3-day camp, Middle School kids will learn how they can give back to their community and even work on ideas for starting their own nonprofit. If you know a kid who would be interested, check out the link to the camp in the comments here.

Donnie just spent 4 days in Washington DC as one of two kids from South Dakota who were chosen to receive the The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. One of the highlights of the trip was meeting Michael Phelps. Donnie was pretty excited about that!

He also had the opportunity to meet over 100 other kids from across the country who are doing great projects in their communities. I have a feeling he picked up some cool ideas to implement back here...

Thank you to all who have helped Donnie with Project Donnie as well as Donnie's Closet. We are honored to know you all!! Let's keep it going!!

Another great charity started by kids in SF.... if you have an instrument that you (or your child) no longer uses, please contact South Dakota Heartstrings and they will get it into the hands of a child who wants to play. They will even fix it if it needs fixing....

Josephine and her friend, Katie, delivering another cello. Imagining it being used by someone who would otherwise not be able to play because there are not enough to loan in the school system makes us happy.

Donnie and friends packing kits for homeless teens. They were speedy packers! We now have 25 kits for teen boys and 20 kits for teen girls. They will be delivered to Church on the Street this week. Thanks everyone for helping!!

We are ready to do another Project Donnie project and we will need some help with this. The Sioux Falls Church on the Street needs some 'teen kits' to give out to homeless teens and Donnie is up for the challenge. I think we can shoot for 20 'boy kits' to pack, but we will need donations of items (we don't accept cash). Here is what we are looking for, let me know if you can help us. We need 20 of each:

Drawstring bags
Chapstick
Toothbrush/paste
Combs
Nail Clippers
Razors - for men
Travel size shaving cream
Deodorant
Packs of Gum

Once we have all the items we will set a time for a Packing Party. If you know of someone that wants to help with 'girl kits' let me know and I can send a list of items needed...

Looking for girl clothes (leggings, long sleeved tops, hoodies) size 5 (small) and shoes size 12; and boy clothes (jeans, athletic pants, long sleeved tops, hoodies) size 7 (small) and shoes size 11. Let me know if you can help. Thanks!!

After all the negativity surrounding the election, Donnie and I have decided that doing something positive would do us all some good.

Since he has the day off from school on Friday (11/11), we will be driving around town collecting items for Donnie's Closet. If you have sports shoes or equipment to donate, please let us know and we will come and pick it up.

We are also collecting blankets and warm clothing (hoodies, coats, hats, gloves, boots, etc) to donate.

We are going to be delivering the Halloween costumes soon. If you have a costume for any age/size that you would like to donate, please let us know and we can arrange a pick up/drop off. Thanks!
