Thank you to all the volunteers that came to help with the climbing and cleanup at Community Cove this weekend!

With your support (and a gallon or two of The Breaks coffee) we cleared away dead tree limbs hanging above our favorite two bolts problem(Two Ways About It), cleared the stairway for an easier walk to the cove, scrubbed away enough lichen that Zach is still finding some in his hair, and put some time into the Solstice route and Be a Believer!

Again, thank you to for sponsoring the event and everybody coming out before the weather turned sideways in the afternoon.

On the lookout for more events from the GPCC coming soon!

Introducing a new series: the Local Crag Spotlight ☀️🧗‍♀️

There are tons of great places to climb within an hour of Sioux Falls so we’ve decided to highlight some of the crags in our area! Each post will feature a different local climbing spot - what makes it unique, what to expect, and why it’s worth the visit. Whether you’re new to climbing in our area or you’ve been pulling on these rocks for years, we hope this series helps you discover, or rediscover, some local favorites!

First up is Cactus Patch 🏜️ at Dells of the Sioux

This one is off the beaten path and chances are, you might not even know it exists! That’s because it’s one of the newer bolted areas at the Dells, it’s located across the river, and it isn’t yet on Mountain Project (coming soon! 👀)

Where’s it at? About 50 yards downstream, or south of Peanut Gallery North. Getting to this one is fun! Park at the little gravel turnout (see map) and walk across the street towards the river where you’ll find a path that takes you through the brush. Keep an eye out for cacti 🌵👀 and be sure not to walk on the paved driveway or mowed grass, it’s private property. About a half mile in, you’ll find a pair of rap bolts, they can be tricky to spot! There’s also a short fourth class scramble a bit further along the path located near the fence. Once you’ve made it down, there’s an easy traverse over the water back to Cactus Patch where you’ll find 3 bolted routes just waiting to be climbed! 😎 All graded 5.8, this wall boasts some fun, classic Dells style climbing! Check this crag out if you’re looking for moderate, off the beaten path sport climbing routes with excellent river views!

Added bonus: the base and wall of this area have recently been cleaned up and it’s currently free of overgrowth! DM if you have any questions and tag us when you climb here!

Looking for a great way to get involved with your local climbing community? 🧗‍♀️ Look no further! For the month of March, you can become a member of the GPCC! Some rad perks of membership include:

- Outdoor climbing events at various local crags to climb and hang with community members. 😎 This is a great way to meet other climbers or get outside to climb if you haven’t before!
- Development and maintenance of the Dell Rapids sport climbing area. A continuous work in progress, keep your eyes open 👀 for future events to help keep the area accessible and clean!
- Continued access to difficult to reach crags by maintaining pathways and keeping belayer areas clear of brush and overgrowth. This is huge, that early summer tall grass can swallow a low traveled path in days. 🙅🌾 iykyk
- Scouting of new areas with the potential to develop sport climbing, and working with local officials to make it happen!
- Access to ProLink discounts all year long (must sign up in March to get discounts)

Our local climbing community is better with YOU in it! 🧗‍♂️ Click the link in our bio or hit up gpclimbers.com to become a member today!!

Curious about outdoor climbing, want to check out a local crag, or just be in community with other climbers? The GPCC will be at the Dells of the Sioux on Saturday, June 14th from 10-4 giving tours of the area and chatting about all things climbing! We will have water to keep you hydrated (byo water bottle), the opportunity to join the GPCC and order new merch, and the best vibes! Come hangout with other climbers, enjoy the outdoors, and send some routes!!!

This area is filled with sport climbing and everything from a great beginner area, to hidden gullies, routes over the river, gnarly rooftops, as well as some bouldering.

Things to keep in mind:
•Located in Dell Rapids, SD and is considered part of the city park so parking is free and no permit required.
•There are no restrooms of any kind.
•Dogs are not advised due to the natural abundance of cacti and the general inaccessibility for dogs in most climbing areas.
•Leave no trace and leave the area better than you found it.
•Shop local in Dell Rapids - get groceries, gas, eat at some great restaurants and even camp 1/2 mile from the crag.
•If you need gear: sign up for a GPCC membership to get sweet industry discounts OR visit our local gear shop

We are psyched to see you and stay tuned for more info!!!

GPCC is leading a Blue Mounds cleanup this Wednesday afternoon (3pm), April 9th, focused on the North Quarry Area.

We are asking for any volunteers who want to help remove debris and vegetation that limit access to routes as we work with park staff to improve outside climbing.

Please like/comment on this post if you are willing to help.

Get outside, do something good, hang out with cool climbers!
